On the way to work... 🇳🇱

#AboutToday

@TacticalGrace_ oh, lovely! Most of the Dutch ones were originally (and still are) actually used to pump out water given how otherwise big parts of the country would be under water 😅 There is a functional one to ground wheat in Leiden, too - it's only working/open some days and I definitely want to visit and buy some flour!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@TacticalGrace_ tbh, I also only learned this a few years ago! Totally makes sense but somehow I never realized...

If your vacuum cleaner does not wlhave the power it used to anymore, change those filters. Seriously. Invest the money, change the filters. It's magic.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@CGdoppelpunkt this is about when this is not doing it anymore (also not all filters can be cleaned with water).

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@EricBranse that is actually clever - I did try to use the handheld one for this, but the power isn't quiet there + the filters were really old, like ~six years by now. (some of them during the height of the pandemic when the cleaner wasn't used much as I was at a different place.)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@CGdoppelpunkt excellent! My only similar deed was to "repair" the vacuum cleaner of some folks I was subletting from for two months and who were very apologetic about their vacuum cleaner not working properly 😂

For a bit of Sunday happiness & silliness: tell me about some a book you've recently excitedly told someone about and why!

I've talked about Erin Meyer's "Culture Map" because it opened my eye to a lot of intercultural interactions I have in both, my everyday and my work life.

And about Marcin Wicha's "Things I Didn't Throw Out" because it made me laugh and cry at the same time + made me fall in love with Daunt books because I would not have found out about the book without them.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@glittercleric I just looked up the book - sounds absolutely lovely, thanks for sharing it here! (I also have a thing for Japanese fiction in general, so this is right up my valley :) )

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@grb090423 oh, I just looked it up - I had no idea about her! (And know very little about the British Isles during this period - kingdom of Mercia said nothing to me and I may have places it somewhere in Spain or or, confusing it with Murcia ... 😅 )

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@ives oh, nice! I've read another of Marlon James' books (Black Leopart, Red Wolf) and while overall it was not quiet mine, I do remember the language being fascinating!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@Just_an_Aari oh, I am glad to hear about the book being such a lovely experience for you <3

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@jana_w definitely you did, but it's good to give me a reminder :D it on my wishlist, let's see when I get my hands on it actually :D

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@Artemis201 oh wow, I had no idea about this! Super interesting (and both sad that this was needed and wonderful that it existed for a while ...).

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@clear_dusk oh, that one was an interesting read. Also an interesting dive into Japanese society...

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@kittylyst it's a lovely book - I read it in almost one go on a long train ride last year!

And what a cool website - thanks, bookmarked! It also has "Lud in the Mist", which is another book I enjoyed and recommended recently to friends!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@DM_Ronin this sounds like such a lovely book - and I do hope it landed with your parents 💚

Another perfect long weekend day: visited Eindhoven for the first time, met two lovely people (wink to the one who is on mastodon!), eare yummy Ramen, dropped by the Philips museum, got ideas about how to approach writing a book and had the chance to recommend Erin Meyer's "The Culture Map".

#ReadingOnTrains - I really prefer old book editions. Thinner paper, smaller font, more compact page layout. A lot more book per centimeters of precious shelf space or cubic centimeters of bag space. Need more contemporary books that are that compact...

I liked people posting annoying commentary as quote-tweets a lot better than when they do it in comments. Quotes were easier to ignore - because it felt that they were meant for their followers, not for me to react to and to manage (esp. if I don't want to be flooded with notifications). Can't wait for the feature.

(Because this is : you may feel different about this. It is obviously fine. Be civil, don't mansplain - even if you are not a man.)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@RaphaelWimmer I like the whole idea of "people coming into my house" because that's the reason why I dislike it: it feels like my responsibility to make sure it's civil (since other guests may see it) and to counter even where I think that disengaging is a much better strategy.

Mastodon gives one no control over comments, so it's like I open my door everyone comes in and I need to clean up after them to make sure other guest are still welcome.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@RaphaelWimmer honestly - given the kind of comments I tend to get here, I'm fine with folks being somewhat uncomfortable and thinking twice before commenting. Because many clearly don't otherwise.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@RaphaelWimmer you have a much smaller account and are not female, both things may play a role here :)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@RaphaelWimmer (as a side note: I really enjoyed the peer discussions I could have on twitter, but my community did not move her for the biggest part ... :( I do miss this. )
