Updated this article with an extra para on the school system & realise how confusing it is. I speak 4 languages only because I had the luck of growing up in certain areas & studying in schools where Malay, English and Chinese are used often. These days, it's not unusual to find graduates who can only speak ONE language. In , this can be limiting, especially if you cannot speak Bahasa Malaysia, the national language.

@liztai I feel like it's English educated is also not quite the correct way of describing also because there's a difference between mostly Malay-medium national schools and the private/international schools... Haha. But yeah our system a bit rojak

@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@geraineon no wonder we end up as confused adults lol

@liztai and not forgetting the quality range of national schools... And location. So some who attend national schools end up mostly Malay + Chinese speaking, some end up English + Chinese, some English and cannot Malay, cannot Chinese

@liztai my school had a lot of old teachers who taught when the medium of instruction was English so half of them ended up teaching subjects that were supposed to be taught in Malay half in English anyway

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@liztai in short: rojak

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@geraineon I like rojak. Especially the oasembur one 😂
But imagine trying to explain why we have multiple English accents to a foreigner lol

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@geraineon oh ya true true lol.

clacke,

en.wiktionary.org/wiki/rojak

> (cooking) A traditional Malaysian and Indonesian salad of mixed raw fruits and vegetables served with a sauce.
> (Malaysia, slang) A person of mixed ethnic heritage.

Haha, I find that quite lovely.

@clacke "rojak" is also a word we used for "chaos" lol

@geraineon I swear, if not for the accident of growing up in Penang and JB, and then studying in a Convent school in JB and then in a very urban top tier PJ school, I wouldn't even have my English mastery, let alone be fluent in Malay and Chinese. If I had grown up in a village... And went to a Chinese school, pretty sure I would be Chinese and Malay speaking only.

@liztai my father wanted me to be educated in the pj bubble so it wasn't really an accident ahaha. Die die must register in a PJ school. Cantonese was family + location. I wish I can speak Hokkien though. I couldn't communicate with my grandparents in my father's side till the end

liztai,

@liztai it's I used to live in Puchong ok. Every day in and out, see LDP built, see LDP jam. No friends in Puchong. But well, if my father didn't die die make sure I stay in pj schools, I guess my life would have been quite different now.
