@plink @palestine @israel NYT does not have a stellar record on coverage of that region of the world.

@plink @palestine @israel Having now skimmed through dozens of updates on that link, 1,000s of words, the fact that conducted an illegal act of war against a civilian building on Iranian soil that killed 16 people recently is never mentioned, with the missile strike on is only vaguely mentioned 3 times. It is never labelled an 'unprecedented escalation', despite that being just as true as the latest development.

Also not mentioned by the is the fact that the 1st April Israeli strike was widely condemned as yet another breach of international law —by the , the , the , the , the and dozens of national governments—but was not condemned by the US government.

Also not mentioned at all the highly pertinent fact that Israel (and its primary backer and weapons supplier the ) has spent six months committing atrocities against millions of civilians in , with more children, more journalists, more healthcare workers, more humanitarian aid workers, and more UN employees violently killed than in any other conflict since at least the Rwandan genocide (and in some cases going back to WWII). Israel is responsible for the most rapid deterioration of the nutritional status of a civilian population since WWII.

NYT sucks.

@EndemicEarthling @palestine @israel

All of your factual points are totally correct and well-written.

I post from NYT mainly because I have a paid sub which right now allows unlimited 30-day gift articles. In spite of the consistent pro-Israel bias, it often has news that isn't available elsewhere, and sometimes even excellent articles, such as the one on the West Bank by Roger Cohen a few months ago.

I am now putting in a "Bias alert" disclaimer so that no one thinks I endorse their views.

I think there are quite a lot more reputable news sources than NYT.

The guardian (for EU)
Democracy Now (for US)
Axios (for US)
Al Jazeera (for MENA)
Middle East eye (For ME)
SCMP (for Asia)
El Pais (for LatAm)

The NYT "exclusive" news tend to be much more propaganda than anything, so the objective news value is actually not high.

I agree that most of the sources that you listed are better for the most part, but others in the Fediverse often post their articles. I'm trying to fill in a gap since I have the paid NYT access that others don't have.

If you look at my posts, you will see many from The Guardian, The Intercept, Common Dreams, etc.

I don't think most of the NYT content is propaganda, but it does accept a pro-Israel, pro-US framework that affects the articles.

@plink If you're going to use msm sources be prepared to critique them in the post, or else you're stuck supporting what's in the copy, by default.

@plink You can legally set up a paywall bypass by using archive.today (.is, .ph). It has an agreement with a huge number of msm including the nyt and wapo... and it's cool watching the whitepage it generates to do the copy, update in real time before it delivers the paywall-free version to your screen.😁 @EndemicEarthling @palestine @israel

@plink @palestine @israel I didn't bother getting into all the other details they either get wrong or frame in misleading ways.

One example: they remove refugee status from large numbers of Palestinians, implying that while the target of one of Israel's latest massacres in Gaza was once a refugee camp, that is no longer true. Just because Israel displaced them so many decades ago, doesn't mean they are no longer refugees. Indeed, there are still very large numbers of Palestinians in Gaza (and elsewhere) who remain UN-recognised refugees to this day, with UN resolutions affirming their right to return to their land, resolutions Israel remains in defiance of.
