Holy shit, I thought I knew how evil the #SurveillanceAds industry was but here we are:

Two-thirds of European websites just ignore your #cookie choice and track you anyways, researchers from #ETHzurich found. 🤯

obviously no idea if this is true but it would not surprise me. And we get these cookie popups a lot. an awful, awful, awful lot

@ilumium precisely noone is surprised.

Which is why i let browser-addons enforce my privacy settings.

@mcfly Which ones?

mcfly,
@mcfly@milliways.social avatar

@feliks I have several - in different browsers on different computers.

Noscript is the most drastical one.
Ghostery used to be my main blocker but it failed to get youtube tracking free.
This browser has ublock origin.

All of them work somewhat the same.
My current recommendation is ublock origin. Before it was ghostery, i hope that one gets a bit better again.

all of them require that you understand how they work and how to disable some unwanted data transmission. (or not enable...)

@ilumium
How much of this is evil vs incompetent?

@ilumium Not surprising, but still sad.

@ilumium Which is why you should learn all the places where browsers store data, and delete them all, EVERY TIME YOU CLOSE YOUR BROWSER. I am beginning to believe I might be the only person on the planet with an internet connection who has never seen a targeted ad. I have been using computers for decades before the internet existed, and ran a world wide connected BBS prior to the internet.

@Ulrich_the_Elder @ilumium No, that just gets you logged out of everywhere you wanted to be logged in, and trained to get phished by login fatigue.

The right solutions are UBO and firstparty isolate.

@dalias @Ulrich_the_Elder @ilumium I use both UBO and cookie-autodelete, and even this Firefox "don't keep history" settings for more than 4 years now. And effectively I avoid log into anything except maybe three sites I use regularly. (I also use 2FA in most services so process would be even more annoying.) Maybe it is also the reason I so rarely check my non-main mail accounts...
