Reminder to not work yourself to death for the sake of your employer.

THEY ARE NOT LOYAL TO YOU.

@drahardja You can't say all vendors, customers, employers are employees as a group are not loyal. Sometimes you build relationships with great people and organizations. I don't know anything about , but based on their CEO's antics, I would not be surprised to find they are not a good vendor, supplier, or employer.

@cgervasi You realize I’m speaking in generalizations, yes?

@drahardja

A decent employer would NOT allow their employees to work excessive hours or shower and sleep on the premises.
That should be the tip off right there.

@CindyS I have yet to find this mythical employer.

Individual managers? Yes.

Corporate-wide policy, especially at VP and above? Never.

@drahardja
Agree. They don't exist in 2024.

@CindyS @drahardja they do exist in the EU, specifically in the NL, probably other countries in the union as well. Whether they do it because the law forces them, because of culture, or both, I can't say for sure.

@gryzor @drahardja
The US attracts assholes like Musk and Murdock. 40 years of unregulated capitalism has turned America into a cesspool of toxic greed. It has infected the every level of our nation (e.g. SCOTUS, politicians, the press, most all CEO's and executives). In large part, American's worship money and they worship the people who have amassed money. Greed is the only thing that's "trickled down" since Ray-guns sold a 100 year old debunked economic theory to his disciples.

@CindyS @drahardja I agree.

The article doesn’t post to the video created by Murillo. In it he says he chose to sleep in his car to avoid a three hour round trip to his home. Tesla has not shown themselves a good employer in many ways before this most recent job destruction but they didn’t ask Murillo to sleep and eat on site.

@lumpenpro @CindyS The lesson learned here is to not overwork yourself, whether or not your employer asks you to do it.

@drahardja Recently read some discussion (which unfortunately I can't post) of asymmetric trust based on "An Integrative Model of Organizational Trust" (https://www.jstor.org/stable/258792). That's not to say the advice is wrong, but just to say there might still be ways forward that are beneficial for all (but I am an unashamed optimist).

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@pdbartlett You’re absolutely right: it is possible to have a mutually caring relationship between employer and worker, but in today’s world, it’s very unlikely to happen.

In the 1950s, a (white) American (man) can expect to work for a company that will care for him for the rest of his life. He can join a union that protects him, and expect company executives and shareholders to extract a modest profit and have enough left over to pay for benefits and a pension. Corporate and individual taxes are progressive enough to pay for public goods and services.

That world is largely gone. Corporate greed is out of control. Regulatory capture is extensive, and corporate and individual taxes are now essentially regressive. Stock buybacks ensure that any benefit only accrues to shareholders, not workers, who are now considered undesirable expenses, not partners in progress.

There is no loyalty from employers left. The culture has changed. Our expectations must change as well.
