Italian physician, naturalist, biologist & poet Francesco Redi died in 1697.

A rationalist of his time, he was a critic of spontaneous generation. He disproved that vipers drink wine & could break glasses, and that their venom was poisonous when ingested. He correctly observed that snake venoms were produced from the fangs, not the gallbladder, as was believed. He was also the first to recognize and correctly describe details of about 180 parasites. via @wikipedia

I really wanted to get rid of my old car, which I almost never use and buy a small electric something for when my bike is not enough.
Husband booked an Ami for me! 😍

@GustavinoBevilacqua @juc they've become surprisingly common in my whereabouts in the last year or so. I wouldn't be surprised that the “free parking if you're charging your electric car” spots around the city have something to do with it.

From what I gather the very first PR coup that C++ has achieved in the last 12 years is Joe Biden trying to discourage people from using it

Chrome one year ago was basically everything I wanted out of a web browser, Chrome eight months ago was what I wanted out of a web browser but it's trying to spy on you unless you click many settings on every profile, Chrome four months ago worked for me but I didn't like the interface anymore, Chrome today I don't like the interface and also it seems to fairly frequently crash so I keep losing my arrangements of tabs.

Today I'm annoyed about Unix named pipes.

Specifically, the way that trying to open one blocks in the open(2) call until something opens the other end. It's too all-or-nothing: if the other process never started up for some reason, you just sit there, still blocking in open().

I want a way to convert 'attempted open of a named pipe' into a thing I can add to a select() or poll(), so I can wait for that or some other event, whichever comes first. And then cancel the open attempt, if need be.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@isomer @simontatham @pulkomandy

crazy idea, if you can use POSIX shared memory: shm_open a two-byte file where both sides write a 1 in different bytes when they are ready and the open() is attempted only when both sides wrote it. It would still require polling, but in memory.

Sadly, even without fast-math the default value of the FP_CONTRACT pragma may be ON (standard states the default value is implementation-defined), and that by itself does enough damage. So rustc effectively works like C++ with FP_CONTRACT‌ OFF?

INFO: May 12th, 2807. ACADEMIA - LUSITÂNIA. 2 Panels Panel 1: A top view of a plaza, surrounded by white buildings. A man goes accross an ornamented stone gate. On the foreground, there's a clock tower, at the top of which a flag waves in the wind. Panel 2: Eurico goes across the plaza and under a row of trees.
The Foreigner. Like a painting where you can see the brushstrokes. His face is covered by a red mask with a black cross over it. Strangely angelic.
4 Panels. Panel 1: The Foreigner is looking towards the ocean, with his desluso mask on. Further, the box and the meditan contents, still open and slightly spread out. Filipa (off panel): Who are you? Where did you get all this meditan shit and that FORMER spaniard? Panel 2: Ângela stands in front of the ocean, looking back at Filipa. Behind her, the dark ocean, the clouds and the moon's reflection on the water. Ângela: My name is Ângela, Sinistra SECUNDUM PRAXIS. I'm on my second year of med school and I work at the Academia's morgue. I have access to the storage facilities. Panel 3: Ângela looks at her hands, which display wounds again. Filipa is behind her, holding the shotgun. It's windy. Filipa: Oh yeah? And what do you do at the morgue? Ângela: I clean and reconfigure corpses. Filipa: Simplify that for me, will you? Ângela: I rewire their neural pathways so they're easy to control in battle. Panel 4: A close up of Filipa's face. We can see her squinting behind the mask.
