Folks I know comic platforms make it look like #webcomics are dead, but I can assure you, we are EVERYWHERE and still fighting, but you have to follow our links and our webrings!!
It's surreal how slowly time moves in the world of C compilers.
Today there are still active projects that are hesitant to move past C89, and C99 is still the "new" standard.
The C99 standard has been released before the first public Mac OS X and Windows XP. It's older Itanium and the x86-64 instruction set. It predates iPod, Game Cube, first ever Xbox, and Nokia 3310.
Entire platforms lived and died in the meantime, while C programmers still can't be sure if they can rely on the new C99.
@kornel I blame Microsoft for that. The last time I checked (which isn't even that long ago. 201x?) their C compiler still didn't have full C99 standard compliance.
The Leaving Rust Gamedev article resonates with most of the frustrations I've had working on the internals of Tangerine (C++) since I converted it from being largely single threaded spaghetti to aggressively concurrent spaghetti, and that's making me think maybe I'd have a better time if I picked a different language for the hot paths, because necessary non-compulsory refactoring also kills iteration time.
I just don't know what though, because nothing ever seems to fit the bill of what I need.
I still wish they'd release the original Star Wars movies without all the CGI remaster stuff in them. It all stands out so badly now - really doesn't fit well any more imo.
This is probably just the communities I'm in, but it feels like whereas AI art had a fairly serious backlash, AI music has not? Is this your impression?
@ZachWeinersmith much less used, mostly trained on long-dead artists, longer history of procedural music generation with human-designed (as opposed to “scrape content everywhere”) algorithms. Very different situation.

going through old images i stored and found this classic. for a while i put "most likely to be the next phil fish" in my bio on twitter as a point of pride
@lisyarus@eniko (another person neutral to achievements) This kind of comparison is particularly interesting when the game is not linear, because it's interesting to see which paths people may prefer. If well designed, they can also become a challenge at trying to do stuff in a different way, learn things about the game that you wouldn't learn otherwise, etc.
Today I've read about a bunch of farmers who probably had H5N1 but refuse to test, cats getting infected by drinking raw milk on farms, and a dolphin dead from it
Honestly not feeling very optimistic about this one. Wish I could trust any of the soothing things governments or media are saying about it but I won't fall into that trap again now I've seen how they behaved during the still ongoing covid pandemic
EDIT: And I should clarify I wasn't going out of my way to see H5N1 news, this is just stuff that has come across my feed organically in the 1 hour I've been awake lmao
@aeva is that the 7:4 up:downscale trick or the “3:2 and then I'll fake it by changing the font DPI only” trick?
(Fun quips aside, this does matter because depending on how this is achieved, how this information is communicated to apps, whether this is on Wayland or X11, and what pygame is using, the solution is different, if at all possible.)
Just opened my ThinkPad and for the second time in three days the act of closing the laptop to sleep it, then opening it again had caused Ubuntu to hardlock. This time I got a very brief small printout about "amd ring 0 error", then it went back to a black screen and I had to hold down the power button again.
I thought getting a ThinkPad, getting AMD cpu/gpu and picking the Linux distro Lenovo lists as supported would mean I got a minimally functioning computer but I guess not.
@TomF@mcc the trick is to use Linux so they don't work when they ship either because the kernel still needs a couple of iterations to get support for them.
got unfriended on facebook for pointing out the inanity of "you put a cover on your ipad because you value it, so girls should dress modestly and cover themselves"
