They had a lot of interesting information on their forum while it was still active. That's how I found out about the tinygl fork picogl. Also, one of their users did a great job putting together a list of portable FLOSS that ran well on Syllable: https://sites.google.com/site/syllablesoftware/home
When I was just a young lad, my friend and I found 2 copies of OS/2 1.1 Enterprise Edition at a bankruptcy sale for $25 each. EE retailed for over $1k, and the base license was separate from the EE part. We both found buyers (through BIX) for the EE part at $250. Then we got a free upgrade from 1.1 to 2.0 because we registered 1.1 right before 2.0 shipped. Pure profit!
OS/2 was always a pain in the ass but the struggle was part of the fun.
Wasn't there for that but Microsoft seemed very focused on overshadowing it with Windows after the partnership ended too? Easy to say now but it's possible they really shouldn't have done that
I tried to get this running on an '040, never got anywhere. Despite finding supposed install media on Hotline or whatever, which was probably BS. I ended up installing NetBSD and WindowMaker on the same hardware.
I used DR-DOS for years; and in fact my first Windows machine didn't have MS-DOS, but was DR-DOS 6 and Win 3 (obviously with the AARD code cut out). I heard about the kerfuffle with 8.1 & FreeDOS, but I have a soft spot for DR-DOS even still.
Great to see this magazine here - makes it much easier to abandon Reddit.

Interests/hobbies: Collecting ThinkPads and other retro hardware, mostly from the 90s.
What interests you about retro/vintage OSes? It mostly brings back memories when operating systems were more unique. Linux-based OS are becoming way more mainstream and kinda boring these days and especially Microsoft Windows totally lost its track. I love tinkering around with OS like older Unices (HP-UX, Solaris) or Windows 3.x-XP and DOS.
What was the first OS you used as a kid? MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1
What is your current OS you use? Fedora 38 and Pop!_OS 22.04
I would pay so much money for an OS skin that made everything look like this... I don't know how (or why) they came up with that peach + blue colour scheme, but I love it.
the way that the folder icons are just individual drawers, like someone's just pulled them out of the chest and plonked them on the desktop😭it's fabulous
