I googled “autism and traumatic brain injury” hoping to find something about living with both at the same time.

ALL the results were studies done to see if TBIs cause autism. 😒

Not one article, reddit post, quora post, was about living with both. Ugh.

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic fwiw Google went to hell some time ago, with barely any result on the first page that isn't spam, ads, or clickbait. It's become so useless that I've went back to my pre-Google habit of running searches through 2-3 search engines when I really need to find something.

@ScruffyDux@fosstodon.org avatar

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic I had the same experience trying to find out if we might have a tendency towards blood sugar issues.

Thanks so much for your absolutely deranged research preferences NT scientists.

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic deranged research preferences is a good way to describe it

Tooden,

@ashleyspencer So, they are still frantically attempting to find a 'cure' for autism, or how to prevent it from developing? Money that would be better spent in researching ways to accommodate what can't be 'cured', and should be understood.🙄 @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@Tooden @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I really don't understand why they just won't accept that it's genetic. It runs in families.

2 of my cousins thought vaccines gave their sons autism. It's like umm you carried the autism genes from our grandfather. His father was probably autistic too. My grandfather's journal letter said all his dad did was spend time tinkering with his inventions.

@Tooden @ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic Yes, and 9 out of 10 studies act as though autistic people never grow up, that adults don't exist.

It's so tiring.

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@ScruffyDux @Tooden @actuallyautistic That's like that lady who called me "a grifter". She could not fathom that an autistic person could have a successful business selling to autistic people so I had to be a neurotypical lying about being autistic.

ScruffyDux,
@ScruffyDux@fosstodon.org avatar

@ashleyspencer @Tooden @actuallyautistic She said fucking whaaaat?! What a horrendous person. Gee, I wonder why so many of us end up "socially withdrawn".

And now I'm curious, what is your business?

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@ScruffyDux @Tooden @actuallyautistic The sad thing is she replied to my reply on someone’s post who was really stressed out because they couldn’t access a diagnosis and don’t self-diagnose because people are mean.

I had told the person that I’m as out as it gets and have a business for autistics and don’t have a diagnosis so don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re not autistic when you know you are.

It enraged the lady.

Tooden,
@Tooden@aus.social avatar

@ashleyspencer People like her drove me off Facebook. Irrational, abusive stickybeaks. Can't mind their own business. Social Media has given the mean, nasty creatures a place to vent their unreasonable fury at everyone, without fear of physical repercussions. And Farcebook/Meta rewards the bullies. @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic

@Tooden @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I’ve developed a philosophy of all it takes is trolling me one time and I block them. Don’t engage just block. I’ve never had to block anyone here on the Fediverse, only on my business social media accounts, and personal Facebook when I blocked my narcissist ex lol

@ashleyspencer @Tooden @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic
I've had to block one person, who flipped out on me and started accusing me of not being autistic, as well as many other things. But, that's the only one. To be honest, hearing about other's experiences on other sites, has made me realise how truly lucky I was in trying this one first.

ScruffyDux,
@ScruffyDux@fosstodon.org avatar

@pathfinder @ashleyspencer @Tooden @actuallyautistic I've been trying to wrap my head around the seemingly irrepressible compulsion people have to form a hostile delusion that every single chronically ill or disabled person is faking.

It seems itself to be pathological and pervasive, and though I can make observations about them wanting to avoid discomfort or sharing, I still really don't understand its origins and it's level of strength properly. It's very strange.

@ScruffyDux @ashleyspencer @Tooden @actuallyautistic
For some people, the ability to imagine that others like them could live in constant pain, or disadvantage, is impossible. To attack the merest hint that this could be so, is far easier and comforting to them. It is perhaps driven by fear, as much as petty spite.

ScruffyDux,
@ScruffyDux@fosstodon.org avatar

@pathfinder @ashleyspencer @Tooden @actuallyautistic What do you think drives the vitriol?

pathfinder,
@pathfinder@beige.party avatar

@ScruffyDux @ashleyspencer @Tooden @actuallyautistic
Privilege and entitlement. Neither comes exclusively from money. But the belief that your group and position is beyond justified and therefore nothing else has any true value or worth. That the view you have of belonging, is the only one, because it's supported by those around you. It is the group dynamics of othering that some people can't get over, even when they discover that they are other. And perhaps because of that, makes them even worse.

ScruffyDux,
@ScruffyDux@fosstodon.org avatar

@pathfinder @ashleyspencer @Tooden @actuallyautistic That's one of the most upsetting things to me: When someone's defence against being othered is to look for whoever is considered lower on the hierarchy and point at them, saying leave me alone and go after them instead.

It happens all the time, in multiple contexts, and it's sickening.

@pathfinder I think fear also drives 'gatekeeping'. You can't be this 'because', or that 'because', is probably internalised ableism, and the cliquiness of allistic behaviour. The I-won't-let-you-join-my-club kind of thing.
Also, there is no rule that Autists have to like each other, or agree 100% of the time. @ScruffyDux @ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic

@Tooden @ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic I love these sites! Thank you Ashley for doing the good work.

You're actually doing what I've been thinking is the way. Forget about begging hostile people to treat us decently, give us jobs, research how to improve our health and so on, and start moving to do all those things for ourselves.

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@ScruffyDux @Tooden @actuallyautistic Thank you 😊 And yes, giving a big f*** you to the neurotypical world has been nice haha

@ScruffyDux Last year, someone created a furor on the actually autistic hashtag, saying that anyone over 30 something couldn't possibly be autistic, because autistics don't live that long. It was very distressing. They were formally dxed, as a child. If this is what ABA does to young Autists, it is evil. @ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@Tooden @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic That’s horrible! Sounds like they were directing their own self-hatred at other people and disappointment when they reached 30 and were still autistic. Awful that a kid would even get ideas like that ingrained into their mind in the first place.

Tooden,
