The additions to the alone make me want to install the 5.1 right now. 😅️🫣️ https://www.bitwig.com/account-profile/

@amadeus yeah! This update is massive! Also looking forward to play a bit serious with this first beta!

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@solidtrax I haven't had the time yet, but it's sitting there just waiting for my trigger finger. 😅️

solidtrax,
@solidtrax@mstdn.social avatar

@amadeus so far it is amazing. So do it do it :-)

The only thing is that the - probably because of logging? - CPU usage is a lot high than normal with the same project. But it could be our config ofc.

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@solidtrax It really is! 🫢️ Like many of the before it is packed with so many small and new that it feels pretty substantial when you dive in, right? Very cool! 🤓️

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@solidtrax Haven't noticed the higher CPU usage yet.

@amadeus Agreed! I like the addition of comments to the Mixer, but I'm missing the big gorgeous meters. I still hope they will bring them back somehow. Now the UI is flexible and you can make the channels taller and wider, but the meters remain thin and with a limited height.

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@icaria36 I will have to look into this again as I also really love the large meters. From my first minutes of playing with 5.1 Beta 1, I got the impression that the meters could be enlarged to basically any size. But again, I need to look into this more closely.

@amadeus How are ppl feeling about Bitwig since the paid devices kerfuffle?

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@macberg I seem to be out of the loop because I don't know what you're talking about. 🫣️🙃️ Or do you mean the spectral devices "bundle" that was offered as a paid update and, after quite a few complaints, was included with the standard update plan?

macberg,
@macberg@mastodon.online avatar

@amadeus Exactly that. They didn't revert anything fundamental, they just decided to not charge for those devices. The ToS still changed, so they will most likely deviate from the "everything included" in the license to paid extras. And given their already very short (1 yr) and expensive licenses it feels like they're right there at the border for where I draw the line.

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@macberg I don't know, but I guess I like to #own things, especially when they're as essential to me as a #daw. I think there is something subconsciously reassuring about "owning" something. Whereas with a #subscription, you could lose the service or product at any time. Of course, I would ultimately prefer Bitwig to be #opensource. Then I could be super calm and express my gratitude with #contributions and #donations. 😇️ But that is probably #utopian (for now).

macberg,
@macberg@mastodon.online avatar

@amadeus Exactly! They're doing good work, supporting Linux, CLAP, the DAW format etc. It would be a shame if they cross the line. And since they're so close, and they showed with the paid devices that they don't mind taking steps in that direction I'm a bit hesitant to make myself more dependent on their software. But, at least I'll still have the version I paid for (I hope).

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@macberg Let's hope for the best. 🙏️ And, positive syncing. ✨️🌟️

@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@macberg I don't exactly love Bitwig's update plan, although I find it acceptable (especially compared to "normal" subscription models). Still, I would prefer to pay for updates and even features and try to avoid subscriptions whenever possible.

macberg,
@macberg@mastodon.online avatar

@amadeus Agree 100%. Subscriptions are absolute deal breakers for me. So Bitwig is, so far, at least on the right side if that line. But they're basically right ON the line lol. A strong gust of wind and they'll be on the wrong side.

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@macberg On the other side I know Bitwig's management team personally and trust that they will make "good" decisions in the future. 😇️

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@macberg I know what you mean and I had similar thoughts back then. But who knows, maybe there were other reasons for trying to sell this bundle separately. I know from peronal experience that controlling the cash flow in a small company is sometimes anything but easy. I don't want to imply anything, these are just the thoughts that come to my mind.

macberg,
@macberg@mastodon.online avatar

@amadeus I'm sure they have reasons for doing what they did. If nothing else they have to follow the same rules of capitalism as everyone else (and therein lies much of the problem).

Good to hear you know and trust the management team though! That is actually reassuring.

@macberg Unfortunately most of us are (still) "directed" in one way or another by the "need" to make money. While I am convinced that there are alternatives to , namely , , or even currencies that lose value over time (to name but a few), these things are probably still and will take time and courage to develop into serious alternatives for large parts of the population.
