atomicpoet,

Hell yeah! I was wondering when would finally take on ! WordPress.com now allows email newsletters and paid subscriptions!

It just seemed like the right direction to go on -- especially given Substack's questionable leadership team.

What might this mean for the ?

It's no secret that there's lots of work going into the plugin for WordPress, which currently requires installation on self-hosted blogs.

But at some point, I imagine that this may find its way to WordPress.com.

Now I've said previously that email will be core to future Fediverse adoption. Email is what drives adoption even to this day. Hell, it's what grew Substack itself.

Once the stars align for ActivityPub integration and email subscriptions, I believe this is where a federated WordPress can really shine.

Automattic has always struck me as not quite being part of the tech hype sphere - or maybe being 'in it but not of it', as it were. Plus there aren't many large companies that have a better fundamental familiarity with open source dynamics.
Put another way: where Substack lives or dies by stock valuation, Automattic has the privilege of letting its products succeed or fail based on user adoption. Stakes are MUCH lower - upside, similar.

samgomes,

@FeralRobots @atomicpoet @fediversenews Automattic has changed after the Salesforce investments. They don't have that privilege anymore, and are actually playing catch with the hype (various SaaS, Woo Pay, etc.).

They're moving strongly towards content (hiring Pfefferle, Mastodon as an option on Jetpack, WP.com newsletters, VIP's acquisition of Parse.ly, growing focus on Gutenberg and backend UX).

Curious to see how the Fediverse will be impacted (positively and negatively) by these moves.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Substack emphasises a lot the possibilities of their network effects: join Substack and find similar newsletters you will like too.

Auttomatic and WordPress also have an edge in that sense.

We shouldn't have to go to WordPress to enable paid memberships.

Mastodon should also incorporate a payment system for followers, then writers making valuable content and with many followers can make the move to Mastodon.

potatogunkelly,

@atomicpoet oh excellent development
