Back in the day, phone numbers used to belong to carriers. So if you switched carriers, you changed phone numbers.

Feels like the same situation with social networks.

If I move to a new social network, all my followers have my "old number".

Imagine if there was a level of indirection (like an Apple ID or an email) that always led to my current social network.

Impossible? Dumb idea? 🤔

@davemark I think Iconfactory Tapestry is pursuing this?

@wktenbrook I believe Tapestry is a single front end for reading posts, but sends you to various social-specific apps for post creation. Not quite the same thing

@davemark One thing to keep in mind, even in the age of number portability, the number is still associated with the original carrier in the event you ever end service—it goes back to the original carrier to be reused. Additionally, when you port, the new carrier has to service that area. That had led to complications with AT&T pulling out of Puerto Rico or someone with an Alaska number wanting to take it to T-Mobile.

(However, some sort of identity registrar would be neat for social media.)

@ecschwarz very interesting!

@davemark never work on the fediverse, that would require some form of centralized directory, and I’m pretty sure the fedinerds would shit their spleens at the idea.

@davemark and, you didn’t switch carriers because you wanted to. More frequently, it was because you HAD to. Or do without. Or no jazzy iPhone.

@davemark IMnsHO, the problem for social workers is bigger than the phone number. Once you get past the exchange, it isn’t hard to look to see where the line number gets routed. With an SNS, there isn’t a central clearing system for ids. If I want to send you a message m, do I send it to @davemark, @davemark or something else? Then we get to the underlying protocols. The telephone system really only has one protocol and that gets converted to whatever your handset needs.
