@knitting

Instead of accepting the usual offer of a accessory for Christmas, my adult friend has asked me to teach her to knit.

She has vague childhood memories of knit and purl: a beginner.

Is a simple hat, worked in the round, too ambitious for a first project? My reasoning is a one-skein project, wearable, several learning points.

and welcome :)

@HederaVulpes @knitting A dishcloth is a great idea. A hat could also work, but I'd go with a hat that is a rectangle and then sewn up. You can make a fun hat out of two garter stitch squares sewn together (add tassels to the corners for some more fun).

@HederaVulpes @knitting that's a lovely idea. Could you ask her what she would like to make and then help her choose a pattern? Also suggest she signs up to Ravelry and give her a guided tour around it.

@HederaVulpes @knitting Roll hat in the round was my first project, I taught myself, and since the decreases happen at the end, it’s all just knit for the most part. I did learned to do a swatch for gauge later; the knitting store sold me the needles, yarn and pattern so I didn’t have to figure that out. So yes, I think hats are such a nice way to start. The book “One Skein Wonders” has drink coasters and other simple projects as well.

@HederaVulpes @knitting a hat might be a good size project, but I'd say let her chose what the first project is going to be, after doing samples of the basics.
A chosen project that gives her joy is more likely to be a successful learning experience, as she'd want to learn doing it

I hear you, but she's thinking a jumper and I'm concerned she'll lose interest.

@HederaVulpes @knitting yeah, that might be a bit big to start with, but with a relatively simple pattern it might be doable still.
But might be good to try and convince her to test with something a little smaller first, maybe find something that has increase/decrease and other things that would be part of a sweater pattern, and paint is as swatching for technics.

Thank you, I think I'm trying to 'manage expectations' :)

That seems to me a good project to start, maybe after a try-out of what your friend still remembers and can pick up again.
I started to crochet again many years after I had learnt it at (primary) school, and a few years after restarting crochet, I restarted knitting, and it did not take me long to knit a hat in the round. Especially if your friend has you to teach, it is doable. I learnt it from YouTube. It is a nice small project to do.🧶
Good luck!

Thank you, that's helpful.
The very first thing to make I reckon is a swatch, to reinforce knit and purl, maintaining stitch count, learning about tension, blocking etc.

@HederaVulpes @knitting Yes, a swatch, that's it! I couldn't come up with that word, lol
