Hope I'm not disappointing you too much to say that while I do have a decent SLR, this was taken with my iphone and a clip-on macro lens. Sometimes if you keep your eyes open, you just see the shot and take it 🤷

Not to be cynical but I bet an iPhone focuses on infinity, dies an edge detection and then dithers everything outside of the edge to create bokeh. No diss to the designers because the effect is awesome but I bet it's a selective data loss/ manipulation approach.

Well, I won’t claim 100% confidence but I think the bokeh is an optical effect. With the clip on macro lenses, most the focusing was achieved with physically moving the camera close and further away. Again, just an educated guess, but based on what I was seeing as I took the photo.
