Something that puzzles me - people who switch from one DAM to another, like Lightroom to Capture One: None of them have compatible sidecar formats, so what happens to your entire history of edits? Do you just convert everything to JPG and "lock them in" to a look forever? Or just start over and leave the old images behind?

@shacker When I switched from ACDSee to Lightroom, after leaving ACD Systems, I started over. But I still miss some of those edits.

And I'm considering checking out Darktable or similar. I use the Lightroom catalog approach, archived by year, rather than sidecar files, so those edits might end up being trapped in 10+ years of LR catalog files.

It might be refreshing.

@kboyd Interesting. What’s your take on Darktablensomfar? Do you give up much functionality?

I rely heavily on having everything in the cloud, accessible to LR Mobile, and posting from there. It’s hard to imagine using a system that wasn’t cloud based and didn’t have a mobile app. But free is mighty appealing.

@shacker I haven't taken the leap yet; planning to do that later this year as an experimental phase in my photo project
