I need to get a new smartphone since my Pixel 4a ran out of support already. 😞

I narrowed down my options to three devices that fit my requirements.

The Pixel 8a seems to be cheaper and even better compared to the 8.

I won't use games or any of the AI stuff nor Google cloud services. Therefore, I guess that Tensor 4 of the Pixel 9 won't provide much benefit to me.

Unfortunately, the 9 design looks great to me. 🤔

What do you recommend? 🤷 (and why?)

No single vote for #Pixel9? 🤔

#Pixel8 and #Pixel8a are nearly the same, so this might get tricky.

Hi, what about a ?
I use a FP4 with /e/os since 1.5 years.

@voxxx Too big, too heavy, mediocre camera results. 😢

I really wish they would build a phone for me. 😔

Did you compare Google's guaranty for security updates? Pixel 8 is guaranteed for 7 years from the time it came out.

@D22 They all provide the same amount of years starting from their launch.

@publicvoit Pixel 8 has a better camera and smaller bezels than the 8a if those are something you care about :)

@withoutclass Camera: the 8a has higher Megapixel figures so I though that the phone is able to get more out of it.

I saw the higher surface coverage ratio. However, I wondered because they are more or less same size and same pixel density... 🤷

@publicvoit my understanding is it's the same camera as the 7a. But to be fair, I think these days a modern camera phone is going to be pretty similar.

@publicvoit the Pixel 8 is even smaller than the 8a. That was the deciding factor for me.

@cybso They're almost exactly the same size and weight.

The 8a has a smaller bump for the camera I guess. So this would actually speak for the 8a which is also an important factor for me.

I'm planning on testing on my Pixel 4a after switching to the new phone.

If this does seem to work out fine with my most important apps and services, I'll probably switch the new one to GrapheneOS as well.

@publicvoit Do you know the current state of using Graphene/Lineage with banking apps? Last I tried mine as well as Handysignature just outright refused to run, citing "Security", because of the unlocked bootloader.

@pludikovsky I've read that this can be solved and this is the reason for my extra test run using the 4a before starting all over again with the new one.

@publicvoit I am testing GrapheneOS on a Pixel 8 Pro at the moment and the most remarkable thing about it is how unremarkable it is. It just gets out of your way and works. Updates happen without my doing, I just never have to worry about anything.

@jana For most stuff, I'd suppose it works like that.

Unfortunately, I need some paid apps that are available only via Play and some apps do come with special checks for rooted devices + alternative ROMs. This must be checked before I go down that road.
