vlrny,

I am looking to hire a social worker or equivalent in Ontario for 5-10hrs/mo. Eastern ON area, but can likely do remote.

Need someone hip with the complex bureaucracy of supports. But more importantly someone innovative, wanting to explore and foster change and create new things - because existing supports are shite.

Potentially more hrs if you can suss out a grant to pay you to help build

MsM_keepthefaith611,

@vlrny My oldest has 1 more year to go for socially degree, so proud of her. We are in US though - good luck with your search, such a great career for her.

@MsM_keepthefaith611 Aw, thank you so much for your well wishes. Hope your lass has an excellent last year. We need big hearts and social innovators out there!

Experience with autism, chronic illness, medical CPTSD would be super helpful.

Need help with both lining up immediate mundane survival supports. (Including help making phone calls to places I can't access via email) as well as big picture planning and logistics to get me moved to and set up in something healthier and more sustainable.

Hit me with questions, and please boost or share with anyone that might be interested. Thx! 💖

robotdiver,

@vlrny I feel you on this. Non-profit societies might be worth contacting even just for knowledge of other resources.

I know in BC, primary care centers are now staffed with social workers and you can ask to see one. It had been my original plan, but I lucked out on finding a therapist who had also been a social worker in BC and does one pro-bono social work contract a year. They have taken me on and it's helping.

If you have a gp, ask if they can point you towards a social worker as well. Canada has a lot of programs but does a good job at keeping them completely hidden from people who need to access them.

I hope that helps?

@robotdiver Oh yay! I am glad you finally clicked with someone who is actually helpful.

I have seen a housing social worker, two homecare social workers, and am on my third "care coordinator" from my GP health unit - none of which have done anything to actually co-ordinate my care. laughsobs at irony

Everybody is in their public mandate box, and if what I need doesn't fit they dump me and move on.

So looking to hire someone who's mandate is: get my needs met, period.

robotdiver,

@vlrny I hear you. Is it more that you need an intermediary? Could maybe even hire a part time personal assistant to do that part? We need "fixers" for social work like they have in media production.

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@robotdiver That could work. I feel like I am treading deep water and everyone just keeps pointing helpfully to the boats on shore.

robotdiver,

@vlrny Yeah, that's how I feel a lot of the time too. Still fighting to get my disability tax credit. I'm on my third round, and completely exhausted. Every time, all of the hard work falls back on me, the person with the f$&ing disability who is barely functioning in the first place. It's maddening.

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@robotdiver Oof. Crazy making and unnecessary.

You what we need, basic income for everybody. And then social workers can actually help connect people to resources instead of gatekeep services. Which is what we need, and social workers would much rather do.
