Moving my website to a new platform got me thinking.

I first had my website & domain in 1998. Before that, I had webspace with ScotlandOnline.

Since 1998, I've utilised the following technologies for my website:

  • hand-coded HTML
  • my own database & scripts
  • txt2tags
  • Plone
  • Django/Mezzanine
  • Pelican (latest)

It has been a fantastic journey and learning exercise.

I recommend everyone should have their own website. Don't worry about the technology, just do it.

@fitheach My first website, probably around 1999 or thereabouts, was one where folks could download screensavers I'd made. All hand coded html, hosted on webspace from my then service provider. I did it purely as a learning exercise and something to show potential employers. It stayed up for years after I left that service provider, but vanished some time ago. It served is purpose well, had a fair bit of traffic with a shedload of screensaver downloads.

@Glencoe
Fantastic!
How did you create the screensavers, and for which platform?

@fitheach Tbh I can't remember, it was some long forgotten screen saver producing software, but no idea what it was called. For Windows platform.

@Glencoe
Must've been Windows 95/98? Those and Windows 2000 were the only MS operating systems I used.

@fitheach My first actual paying work in the computer world was doing some Flash (then Macromedia) animations for the National Engineering Laboratory.

@Glencoe
Snap!
I used to do that, too.
Macromedia made some great products. Dreamweaver and Fireworks were great.

zudn,

@fitheach I had a hand-coded html website in the beginning. No idea how I managed that.

Hear! hear!

@zudn
It was easier back then. 😃

The first iteration of my website was done without CSS. It wasn't until the third iteration of my website did I use CSS. What a revelation!

I'm not sure if there was any way to have your own website, in 1998, without hand-coding the HTML.
