So, I'm reading up on SAFe (don't judge me I have reasons). Was delighted to learn that principle #2 is "Apply Systems Thinking"...

...until I read the overview here: https://scaledagileframework.com/apply-systems-thinking/ especially "Only Management Can Change the System."

Boy howdy do I have thoughts.

Sure, the people who make & enforce policy, and who set financial incentives, have an advantage.

But everyone in a system affects the system. Not understanding that leads to a whole lot of management fails...

@testobsessed I can't help find anything safe about SAFe. However, if you want a friend to grumble to then I'm your friend.

testobsessed,
@testobsessed@ruby.social avatar

@mlevison awwww thank you! I'm not so much looking to grumble as genuinely looking for info tho. See, I have this simulation...and a hypothesis that it would be best suited to helping folks in large scale orgs who need to learn about or possibly even predict system effects, especially unintended consequences.

mlevison,
@mlevison@agilealliance.social avatar

@testobsessed got it. I remember.

I love simulations.

Funny question are you getting much engagement/use? I gave up developing mine for now, since few people played it.

testobsessed,
@testobsessed@ruby.social avatar

@mlevison some - and the videos are getting some traction. Also - the market for the kind of consulting I do isn't great given the current climate in tech, so I'm continuing to develop it since it's definitely a differentiator.

mlevison,
@mlevison@agilealliance.social avatar

@testobsessed how can I help you? Aside from bad SAFe jokes?

testobsessed,
@testobsessed@ruby.social avatar

@mlevison I'm not sure. I'd love to find a way for small / independent consultants to help one another. Not sure what that looks like other than general community stuff tho.

mlevison,
@mlevison@agilealliance.social avatar

@testobsessed I think you might have created a website for this once upon a time 🙂

In today's world, link to and promote the content of people you respect.

@mlevison @testobsessed you both have me thinking on this now

@mkilby @testobsessed

A small thing that helps me. An RSS feed.

I continue to maintain the world’s largest opinionated agile glossary and reference library https://agilepainrelief.com/glossary fed me great content and I will add it.

I strongly prefer the independent players. Ie you guys.

mkilby,
@mkilby@hachyderm.io avatar

@mlevison @testobsessed working on it. Want to port all the content from my Wordpress site. Don't want to flood an RSS feed

gdinwiddie,
@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@mkilby @mlevison @testobsessed WordPress supports RSS. Add /feed to the URL. E.g., https://blog.gdinwiddie.com/feed

Dave_von_S,

@mlevison @testobsessed you might take a look at the ‘systemic agility’ community on meetup. They are quite active and have many topics on complexity and systems thinking in an agile world.

As far as SAFe goes; while there are agile supporting elements in the ‘operations’ layer, the ‘governance’ layer is just rebranded traditional hierarchy. This is also the cause of the discussions about SAFe in the agile community; it fully supports iterative development and continuous delivery, but it severely crippled the autonomy parts causing the ‘purists’ to not regarding it an agile approach.

mlevison,
@mlevison@agilealliance.social avatar

@Dave_von_S @testobsessed I’m usually called a pragmatiist not a purist. If the orgs using SAFe make it work for them I’m happy. The orgs I’ve seen using it are really not much better off than before Agile can’t along.

That makes me sad

On a related note...anyone aware of SAFe-approved training on systems thinking? I'm aware of the MIT course, but I'm wondering if there's an official course for SAFe that focuses on systems thinking in the context of software development rather than a general course that touches on whole bunch of industries like transportation, manufacturing, medical, etc.

@testobsessed

Here's a helpful page:

"Overall the whole description of system thinking within SAFe is quite shallow and even though it is mentioned quite often, there is no specific guidance for non-expert in system thinking. Most people just read it and probably move on without a clear understanding of what is demanded from them."

@testobsessed Not about SaFe (I confess, I'm not a fan) but systems thinking focused on software systems https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/learning-systems-thinking/9781098151324/

@diana @testobsessed looking forward to this book. More systems thinking is good
