Taiwan_Trails,

This temple has two enclosed courtyards with rain pools. (I am sure there’s a proper architectural term that I don’t know.) There’s something very pleasant about being both inside and outside.

baibi,

@Taiwan_Trails They’re skywells 天井!

Taiwan_Trails,

@baibi Thanks! After the comments above, I had a better keyword for my search and came across that term in this book although the usage didn’t exactly make it clear whether the hole or the pool was what was being referred to. Either way, that’s a perfect name for them, and this book is more interesting than I had expected. https://core.ac.uk/download/7434421.pdf

@Taiwan_Trails called "compluvium" in Roman architecture. I wonder whether it's inspired by.

Taiwan_Trails,

@ocramz Interesting! Thanks for the new vocabulary. I think these are also a feature in some forms of traditional Chinese architecture, but I’m not sure whether they evolved in response to Roman designs or independently.
