@futurebird I would like to ask you an ant question. Bees become queens by eating special food. Do ants also become queens by eating special food?

@GreenSkyOverMe This is a great question. What we know is that female eggs can mature into minors, majors or queens and this depends in part on how much they are fed— but there may be some other signal or ratio of sugars to protein that causes an ant to become a queen rather than a major (both require extra food) There isn’t a universal rule for all ants. In some ants the role of wing buds is critical. Queens will bite wing buds off of young ants to keep them from becoming queens.
