(also the photo is very up close and strange because whichever way I tried to take a photo from further away it turned out to be an extremely unflattering angle lol)
I realized earlier that I've now taken two sleeper trains (or couchette cars? or whatever they're called idk) and both times ended up on the top left bunk ^^
I'm also staring at the smoke detector right above my head and wondering whether they take into account that smoke detectors on these trains are potentially less than half a meter away from people's ears when they go off
or whether they're just as loud as normal home smoke detectors (which would be: quite loud)
and, while I kept the shirt buttoned-up all day and the special occasion T-shirt was therefore arguably pointless, I still want to show that off too :D (still ec)
by the way, if you’re pinging me on Phabricator or Gerrit for anything hackathon-related, it’s a good idea to also let me know e.g. on Telegram / Mastodon or in person – I’m not looking at my emails very much this weekend
I think that's pretty much it for my #WMHack experience! It was amazing, fantastic to meet so many people (and sorry if I didn't meet you!), got some nice work done too and saw other people do amazing stuff! 10/10 would hack again
here's a shot of a bus boarding another ferry earlier today, and a van boarding this ferry as I was walking to the entrance. look at the size of these things
(I’ve had to turn off incoming video now during the screen share, the audio was getting a bit too stuttery. but still pretty good considering how far away I assume we are from the coast)
takes elevator to disembarkation deck elevator doors open literally packed full of people, can't even leave the elevator takes elevator back to another deck
I didn't get a photo of them, but several pedestrian traffic lights had two figures instead of one, and they were either both featureless (read: male) or both with hair and a dress (read: female), holding hands and with a heart symbol between them, so I assume that's the intended interpretation ^^
it's also amazing how this train has much worse wifi than the ferry did out in the Baltic Sea – I had to wait like 15 minutes for the emoji list to load so I could add those blobfoxen above
(tbf that's not really the train's fault – I imagine the ferry pays a hefty price for better receivers and can afford it due to its upper-class customers, but it wouldn't really be sensible to do that on the train. but it would be nice if there were more regular cell towers along the train route)
reached Lund! I know that as the German name of some kind of marine animal (a seabird maybe?) from the translations of some Enid Blyton books (Famous Five and/or Adventure series, not sure) ^^
arrived in Berlin main station! I'm not gonna post a new outfit selfie, just imagine me in the same clothes as yesterday but with twice as much beard stubble
oh, one last observation first. I didn’t notice this until yesterday afternoon, but: it seems weird that I didn’t see¹ any European Parliament election posters in either Tallinn or Stockholm, considering Berlin has had some for weeks (and by now they’re quite prominent, I saw tons on the way home this morning)
¹ (I guess it’s possible that I saw some posters without realizing what they’re for, but generally the layout is recognizable even without speaking the language, isn’t it)
• night trains are pretty damn cool
• couchette cars are fine
• normal seats are absolutely not fine, avoid if at all possible
• ferries are cool, cruiseferries apparently even more so
• at least on big ferries I don’t need to worry about seasickness, not so much because I can handle the movement and more because it’s just not even perceptible (ship big)
• traveling with other people is fun
nothing new there tbh but still good to confirm ^^
@LucasWerkmeister I remember on night trains ~ 15 years ago some seats that weren't couchettes but not normal seats either, they were way more comfy and inclinable, quite ok to sleep on (also there were less seats per wagon). I wonder if those still exist.
