this also kind of ties into how people want matrix, irc, etc channels logged "because we don't want to answer the same question 50 times"

this is why we have forums and wikis

keeping chat comfy and low-stakes is valuable

(i've also almost never found my answers in chat logs and wading through chat logs is a miserable experience)

@lumi the primary reason i want chat logs is dissociative amnesia

there is more of me buried on twitter.com and telegram logs than i actually remember at any given moment

giving that up means forever losing a part of myself

@whitequark i think it's completely valid to have client-side logs for something like this, and you can still negotiate on a retention limit. which could be a month, could be a year, etc

@lumi yeah, it's not principally important where it's stored; for project irc channels i do want them to be indexed and searchable, but that's tech-specific and i remove lines on request; personal ones regularly get archived client-side anyways

as for retention, that's something i see as invasive towards my memory, unless explicitly arranged per-conversation when it's needed for safety reasons

@lumi XMPP follows this general idea. It's a protocol for delivering your messages, not archiving them (although server side logging extensions exist if you need them).
