Something that blows my mind messing with old iPods is the longevity of some of the batteries. I just pulled this battery with a datecode of 2003-05-09 and I'd say it still holds a usable charge. Maybe not the same longevity as it had when new, but definitely still enough to pass muster and not necessitate replacement right now. Not even swelling a little bit.
Only replaced it because I found the corpse of my other 3rd gen and I forgot it had a low use battery on it, so I swapped it in.
