Just cleared out my folder of in-progress files as they had all languished there for too long and obviously weren't meant to be. I'm left with a photo of a lemur that I thought looked boopable and NOTHING else 😮

@eclectech Out of interest, what do you do with the files you clear out?
I always struggle with what I should do with such files. Delete or archive..?

@greenpete These ones are deleted, but the source photos will still be in my photo archive.

When I have an idea for a picture the photo gets pulled into a layered file and saved in my working folder, and they sit there until I finish it or decide "nah, it just doesn't work".

Most are only there for a few days, until I have time, but some loiter!

@eclectech "Pulled into a layered file" - do you mean a .psd .xcf or similar?

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@greenpete Yeah. I have template files for anything going out on social media; one for stills (psd) and one for animations (fla).

I use other things now and then but almost everything stems from those (would love to drop Adobe, and probably could now on the Photoshop side, but animation software still an issue).

@eclectech @greenpete For 2D animation there are at least OpenToonz and Krita

@scherzog @greenpete I'll have a peek, probably due another look.

My requirements are annoyingly specific, so have struggled to find anything I've wanted to swap to in the past but 🤞

@eclectech I say you should just start a new chapter.
Ditch flash, it's so dead, and catch up with the tech.
@scherzog

@greenpete @scherzog Heh, unfortunately it's not quite as straightforward as that.

Ditching it means replacing a tool that I know inside-out with something unknown. I'll be trying to make the same things with it, but suddenly don't know how to do it.

For work projects that suddenly makes everything take LOADS longer, so I either get paid less, or have to increase my fees.

For play projects it removes the 'play' aspect for an unknown amount of time.

It's a brutal change if it doesn't flow.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@greenpete @scherzog I hasten to add if there is something that allows the flow from one to the other without too much hassle I'd do it. It's just quite a big deal.

@greenpete@lor.sh avatar

@eclectech There's a fair bit of open source animation software, and some of cross platform, like #blender which is used by professionals.
Also #Krita, I think is cross platform.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@greenpete Yeah, I've just got a very long history with Flash, and little motivation to learn a totally new way of doing everything, so I keep hoping something with a similar framework will appear. Also decades of files, work and play, that I occasionally need to open which is a big barrier to changing.

It's happened with Photoshop, and you can find alternatives that it's easy to shift to, and open old files, but so far anything I've look at animation wise is a BIG shift & incompatible files.

@scherzog@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eclectech @greenpete If you specifically want something comparable to Flash, Godot with a 2D template is also worth a look.

eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@scherzog @greenpete Will do, thanks. I am a creature of habit, been using Flash since waaaay before Adobe got involved, and it really works for me.

Don't suppose you know if it will open FLA files do you? That would be an absolute game changer.

scherzog,
@scherzog@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eclectech @greenpete I am not aware of such a possibility, but I imagine it would not be too difficult to write a tool that reads them and generates a Godot scene to match, depending on the set of features you need to get across.

ActionScript to GDScript conversion is trickier but also possible if you wanted to really avoid doing that by hand.

@scherzog @greenpete Will definitely check it out. Thanks.

At some point I might just have to accept old files become inaccessible, but it doesn't sit well with me. Am aware I have long animations from 20 -odd years ago that I fear it might be a big ask to convert!
