@robb I'd always thought there was some origin story with a chain of events that culminated in someone shaving a yak to get wool to do something else, but... it's literally from Ren and Stimpy
@sophie@robb I imagine the guy at MIT who coined the phrase saw that Ren and Stimpy episode and just reverse engineered a situation which would get you shaving a yak.
@sarajw@sophie@robb I do find it an irritatingly American phrase, like "going forward". I'd normally describe that kind of work as "faff", even if that somehow, maybe, implies a certain amount of procrastination?
The actual process is much better illustrated from this Malcolm in the Middle scene. Unfortunately there's very little dialog to mine for a better phrase to replace yak shaving with.
