Steve Albini's "The Problem with Music" is pretty great: https://thebaffler.com/salvos/the-problem-with-music

I'd never read it before, thanks @scalzi !

@drhayes And people these days say bands have it bad with the pittance they get paid by streaming services; and they do; but I fear it's just a different type of crap than in the past, which wasn't good either.

Dickhead next door is smoking at her little table again now that the weather has improved.

Her little table is about 5 feet from where I'm sitting in my living room, and directly below my daughter's bedroom.

So despite no-one in my household smoking, we get to enjoy 4-5 months of everything smelling like cigarettes.

Yay!

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@danielholt Commiserations. We don't have it as bad, but our neighbour smokes outside his front door (he's not allowed to do it inside, or in their garden), and in the summer it drifts into our house too. I kind of hope smokers don't realise how bad, and how far, their smoke goes. It'd be embarrassing if they did.

Fever dream idea: 's wide adaption was dependent on reliable web search: It's the fastest way of getting a working solution in an environment made up of disparate software, that's not developed and documented together for consistency. Does that mean s might become more popular as search becomes less reliable, and people have to use primary sources, like the docs more?

At work we have to register being off ill via a 'bot'. It asks for your date of birth in the format: "DD.MM.YY" When it asks for your presumed last day of sickness, it wants the date in the format "DDMMYYYY".

I think this is a cunning trick to see how ill you really are, as to put up with that nonsense you must be feeling really low.

#ShouldHaveBeenAForm

hl,

@fedops Eventually this also ends up in a HR SAP system, making the different date formats even more perplexing.

I've had flu all weekend, so that's not been great. Especially as it means my wife's had to do most of the childcare by herself in that time. On the upside, lying in bed, sweating, and listening to podcasts through fever dreams has given me a few spectacular conspiracy theory ideas.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@qtuu I've mostly just been listening to various BBC ones that are queued up, and I never get around to: In Our Time, Analysis, The Briefing Room and More Or Less. It's more to have background noise, I've not really been in a state to take much in.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but not every id value returned by an API that looks like a Guid, is a Guid. Some of them are just strings pretending to be Guids.

And some of these are CASE FUCKING SENSITIVE.

Switching it up for day 2 of and writing about some basic DIY things I’ve learned in the last few months after lots of dumb errors https://www.neilmacy.co.uk/blog/diy-tips

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@neilgmacy Most useful thing I learnt on a building site doing year 11 Work Experience was "Measure twice, cut once": https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/measure_twice_and_cut_once which I see you've discovered as well. The other thing I learnt was that I wasn't insured to use power tools, and that by arguing a kettle was a power tool, I got out of having to make all the teas for two weeks. (Not really sure what the lesson there is though.)

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@neilgmacy I'm terrible at negotiations and arguments, so I still consider that one of my finest achievements.

My children have (EU) shoe sizes 26 and 31; but like some magician's trick, they can contain a Sahra's worth of sand. If I pull out the insole, and hold the shoe upside down, there's a solid, continuous pour of sand for about 5 minutes.

Good luck to everyone doing . I did think about it, but sadly it'd be /another/ thing I'm committing too, with too little time, and I already have about 100 of them. But looking forward to seeing what everyone writes 🍿 .

WeblogPoMo2024 begins tomorrow. I am going to try and write 31 posts about 31 different songs. And even though that may not happen, at least I made a really fucking awesome playlist.

Obviously don't click that if you're sensitive to spoilers about my blog.

It takes me a long time to write blogposts and certain ones in the past have (at least felt) like they have taken weeks...

Recently I totted it up and I reckon I take about 1.5 hours to produce 1 minute of reading time. So longer posts like my past one about Bank Python which are 30 minute reads...yes they felt hard because they were a lot of work!

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@calpaterson Well, thank you for writing it. I found it very interesting. I also find it takes frustratingly long to write anything, and even after proof reading it a thousand times, there are still grammatical and spelling mistakes in what I've written.

@bendaubney Only a bit I think, this thread describes the kind of issue we're having. It's probably not terrible, but I've not managed to get the motivation up to do it, yet: https://www.elektroda.com/rtvforum/topic3652484.html

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@sarajw @bendaubney It's one of those jobs that probably isn't terrible, but requires to motivation to remove some impractical parts, lie on the floor, and potentially break something expensive. Or I could just pointlessly browse the internet?

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@bendaubney @sarajw To be fair to myself (for once) since it's not urgent, it falls down the list behind the more urgent things that do get done, and the need to have break from time to time. The dishwasher still washes dishes, so that's the important thing. It just means there's this ever growing backlog of things that /should/ be done, but don't happen, which gnaw at my conscience.
