Another thing that's different from my childhood:

How ubiquitous the was. It was in every doctor's office and in as many homes.

I don't remember the last time I saw a Readers Digest.

@vwbusguy
As fat as I know readers digest still exists and their children's magazine is still in production. The parents read Reader's Digest while the kids read Highlights. I had a subscription to it and Nintendo Power.

@Mirppc Nintendo Power and EGM.

@vwbusguy does the organisation even still exist in that form?

@nullr0ute Not that I'm aware of. The company declared bankruptcy twice since then. There's still a website.

@vwbusguy the phone book and the yellow pages, you don’t see many of those either these days!

@Ric @vwbusguy the last phone book I got was about 4 years ago with it labelled as the last one.

Shortly afterwards some put theirs on eBay, as if people would be eager to buy something delivered free to their door

@peter @Ric I remember a sense of feeling like I'd arrived in adulthood when I saw my own name/number in the phonebook.

@vwbusguy @Ric same here, sort of an 80's/90's achievement to have your name in the book
