"It is well-known that some Boeing 747s, for example, use floppy disks to load critical software updates into their navigation and avionics computers.

In San Francisco, the Muni Metro light railway, which launched in 1980, won't start up each morning without a floppy disk that controls the railway's Automatic Train Control System."

@metin

In the 80s were very unreliable, cant imagine now after so many years. And the costs because I guess there is no a huge manufacturing of them 🤷🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

@DBG3D Yeah, I remember losing most of my pixel graphics for one of our games, because a backup on diskettes turned out to be corrupt. Luckily, the graphics had already been processed into the game. 😅

@metin I regularly see floppies used to transfer programs to CNC mills and lathes that are still happily making good parts on factory floors.

@metin 5 1/4" and up Floppies, 3 1/2" Stiffies, well at least that's what we called them back in the day 😂

I get the nostalgia but as a storage device they are crap small and vunerable to magnetic erasure, I know I wiped a whole box once by storing them near an electric meter 😮

@mbt3d Yeah, I remember receiving 3.5" diskettes by snail mail, and had to rip off the sliding metal part because it had become dented. 😖

I also remember using a pair of scissors to make a second little rectangular cut-out in a 5.25" floppy, to make it double-sided. 💚
