branch300bpm, Polish Do you remember those screens displayed after POSTing and before booting OS? I don't remember seeing one on any semi-recent box I own(ed) or use(d)... Damn, I miss them. #retrocomputing #pc #x86
branch300bpm, Polish @tayledras yeah, Lolnovo-branded Thinkpads aren't the thing I was used to.
Deber1an, (edited ) Polish @branch300bpm my laptop does this, but its just the grub boot loader, and i am a linux user
mjgardner, A nerd nostalgia thread of possible #RetroComputing interest:
From 1993-1994, I was a “technical assistant” in the RF Engineering department of #Comcast #Cellular. Back then, Comcast was a scrappy regional cable #TV operator making its first foray into #mobile telephony, not the multinational #telecommunications and media behemoth we know today. (1/6)
mjgardner, Anyway, I did what any underpaid college dropout would do:
• ask #IT for a few extra PCs on the LAN
• distribute the #cellular tower data across #Microsoft #Excel workbooks, one per machine
• write some glue macros to exchange data (probably using Network #DDE or #OLEAutomation)
• babysit the PCs as they inevitably crashed every few hours due to #Windows' flaky cooperative multitasking and its #NetBIOS Frames (then called #NetBEUI) networking protocol (6/6)

root42, Quick reminder that you can find me, @janbeta, @noel_llopis and many other #retrocomputing enthusiasts over on @MakerTube
As there is no ad revenue, make sure to drop a coin in the hat of both MakerTube and the creators!
And the best thing is: you can subscribe to your favorite channels using your Mastodon account! Never miss a video!
thomasfuchs, Missing the time when computer expansions came in beer cans #retrocomputing
BurgersMcSlopshot, @thomasfuchs $3500 and a sixpack to my name (sixpack!)
leadedsolder, FYI, if you are taking apart a Dynalogic Hyperion, there are only six screws to worry about: two flathead captive in the handle, two Phillips on the bottom, and these sneaky Phils on the bottom-side that are SUPER easy to miss.
Don't bother trying to remove the hard-to-reach ones. #retrocomputing
vga256, @leadedsolder thanks for this! i've got a poor old hyperion that needs a major overhaul (it sat in a wet barn for 30 years)
Andreas_SuH1912, German ITS versucht zu booten. Die Hardware scheint zu funktionieren, irgendwo klemmt jetzt das Betriebssystem.

pixel, @cs that was a very hard choice.
cs, @ParadeGrotesque Me too, but not regularly.

knickish, v0.3 of Heffalump (a Mastodon client for PalmOS) is out now! This release (finally) adds the ability to view your own past toots, as well as replies (to both your own and others' toots).
You can grab the app and the conduit installer from the release here: https://github.com/knickish/heffalump_conduit/releases/tag/v0.3.0 or read more about Heffalump generally here: https://www.knickish.com/palm/rust/2023/09/12/a-mastodon-client-for-palmos.html
A screenshot of a Mastodon post on Heffalump. The @ symbol in the bottom right can be clicked to show any available replies.
A screenshot of Heffalump while viewing a reply to the previously shown post (with replies). The @ button in the bottom right is inverted to indicate that replies are being viewed.
snail, @Forbearance @knickish oh. I had not appreciated the significance of the "conduit" (my palm has been in a box for years and I knew some of the later models did have WiFi so just assumed!)
andypiper, @knickish I'd be happy to review a PR to add this to the retro apps section on joinmastodon.org, FWIW!

elosha, German Where the #ICQ „Uh-Oh“ sound really came from: Not Worms or Lemmings, as some are telling you. Instead Windows 3.0 MultiMedia Edition from 1991 contains the exact same sample as „ohoh.wav“. #retrocomputing #windows #1990s
paulrickards, In April 2018 I was having fun with the Okimate 20 thermal printer with my Commodore 64. It’s a fun printer that can use thermal fax paper so you don’t need a ribbon so you can print black as long as you have paper.
This is a PETSCII houndstooth pattern I came up with. BASIC source in the photos. I really like the built-in serif text font.

scrottie, @paulrickards Was my first printer, but for the Atari! I still have a soft spot for all manner of thermal printers.
paulrickards, @scrottie Same! But for all printers and plotters 😆
vga256, as promised, i'm archiving this 42 year old D&D campaign building software on cassette
warning: loud/annoying modulation sounds 😆

mokona, French La dernière session de #RPUfOS (Retro Programmers United for Obscure Systems) était à propos de l'Alice 32/90.
Ma proposition est un match-3, que j'ai développé entre janvier et mai 2024.

woodpunk, Check out this #retrocomputing behemoth!
I ate the banana to give me enough energy to lift this #vintage #PC down from the workbench, so CD case for scale.
cdamian,
philpem, @woodpunk That's a beauty! I'd love to know who made these cases - a family member had the midi-tower version back in the day, and I always liked the aesthetic.
root42, Hands up everyone who had a (shady) copy of PSION Chess on their PC back in the late 1980s / early 1990s!
#psionchess #retrocomputing
rnbastos, @root42 only Battle Chess …
root42, @rnbastos oh I wish I had a boxed copy of Battle Chess! That was obviously a game everyone had, too.
timixretroplays, I saw an inexpensive listing on eBay for a Logitech Sensa mouse last month, so I jumped on it without really looking at it - and the result arrived this week. As far as I can tell, "Sensa" was a sub-brand of their at-the-time MouseMan models, with interesting external finishes - I've seen wood-grain, carbon fibre, and... whatever this thing is, Damascus Plastic? #retrocomputing
timixretroplays, Unfortunately I think the coating on this one was at least partially rubberised, and it's just beginning to decay - it's not at all sticky, but it smells slightly sweet, the texture is starting to feel a bit powdery in places, and there's a couple of patches on top where it's starting to come apart - so this one won't be finding its way into regular use, but it still (to me at least) looks utterly beautiful! #retrocomputing
jake4480, @timixretroplays 🔥🔥🔥
profoundlynerdy, Could #ICQ be reverse engineered and federated as an open protocol? #retrocomputing #internet #askfedi
profoundlynerdy, @RL_Dane Nothing. It was just a hypothetical question prompted by the platform's shutdown.
RL_Dane, WHOA, I had no idea it was still extant all this time!!
