What if Mastodon had a way to save the ALT text you entered each time you used a new image. So if you used the same image later, it would some how know what you used the last time and give you the option to automatically use that instead of having to type something each and every time.

Seems to me there would be some way to be able to do this easily and to save all of us time from having to type the same thing for ALT text on a regular basis.

@cliffwade There's been some discussion about imbedding descriptions as a part of the image metadata.

@beardedtechguy@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade This definitely needs to be a feature.

sam,
@sam@southampton.social avatar

@cliffwade Better yet, it could just use the same image off the storage instead of having a duplicate saving storage space.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@sam You see, now this is brainpower right here and such an excellent idea!

@cliffwade Perhaps having an image and storing that with the alt text would work?

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@bitlevel Sure, which brings me to my question of how do you store ALT text in an image?

For example, Mastodon has the option to pull ALT text from the image you use, but every time I do it, it just gives me a bunch of foreign characters and junk looking stuff. It's not actual words.

bitlevel,
@bitlevel@scuttle.cloud avatar

@cliffwade Not sure the image would be the right location. A database table on the Mastodon server on the other hand…

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@bitlevel Ah, yeah now that makes more sense for sure! Seems like that could require a lot of processing power though.

bitlevel,
@bitlevel@scuttle.cloud avatar

@cliffwade Indeed. Failing that, an EXIF item in the image called ‘alttxt’ might be useful in many things and locations.

lukethelibrarian,
@lukethelibrarian@mastodon.world avatar

@bitlevel @cliffwade the EXIF 2.1 and 2.2 metadata standards already include an attribute called ImageDescription

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@lukethelibrarian So what does that mean exactly? How could that be used to accomplish something like what I suggested?

@bitlevel

stu,
@stu@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade This would be a dope feature. Half the time I don't put ALT text and I know I should.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@stu You absolutely should do it every time because there are lots of people on social media in general with accessibility issues. Plus, discovery of your posts as well as sharing/boosting of your posts would be done a lot more often.

It's a hard thing to do, but I try my best to do it with every image.

stu,
@stu@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade True great point. I will start doing it more often

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@stu Also, it's a proven fact that using images in your posts will get you more traction majority of the time than a post without an image. That's why you'll see I rarely make a post here without an image attached.

stu,
@stu@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade seriously this works for traction ? I had no idea. Lol

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@stu Absolutely, and has for decades now.

Think about it. If you are looking at your timeline, do your eyes not go to posts with images first most of the time or posts with just text?

Images draw attention and users will be more likely to read a post that has an attractive, eye-catching image that draws their attention long before just plain text.

It's no different than driving down the road and having billboards catch the attention of drivers.

stu,
@stu@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade Great point again Cliff. I never actually thought about it that way. Now that you mention it.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@stu Thank you. Stick around Stu and I'll teach you more stuff along the way. LOL

stu,
@stu@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade Lol too funny. 🤣
