erinwhalen,

This story is NUTSO. Who knew that a Canadian inventor had created working solar panels as early as 1905 – and that him being KIDNAPPED is what possibly derailed the evolution of solar tech for decades?

(I thought the story might be exaggerating that last point until I saw the kidnappers' conditions for his release... 😲)

@erinwhalen I remember as a youngster reading something about how Einstein was wrong in his explanation of how solar panels worked...and thinking, "Solar panels are that old"?

@erinwhalen He may have been a scammer. According to this article, which is supported by contemporaneous newspaper reports, Cove was arrested for fraud. His device didn't generate [edit: much] electricity, and the batteries he claimed it was charging were actually being charged by the household electricity supply. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2023/08/16/untangling-the-mystery-of-the-worlds-first-rooftop-solar-panel/

gspeng,

@erinwhalen How do we know it actually worked and wasn’t a scam? https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/200501/history.cfm

erinwhalen,

@gspeng - that's a great question! I found this research report that delves deeper into it and it looks like the answer is unclear. Sounds like according to the patent, the device should have theoretically worked but he didn't seem to have very much success getting investors for it.

@erinwhalen @MarcAbrahams There was a rather intriguing OSINT investigation of the original photos of Cove made by Bellingcat a few months ago. There may be more to this, including fraud. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2023/08/16/untangling-the-mystery-of-the-worlds-first-rooftop-solar-panel/

@MarcAbrahams @erinwhalen What about yawning. Maybe it’s just a middle-aged hippo yearning for its bower in the mid-afternoon after a generous lunch.
