No

spudwart,

Okay, next plan is to start buying non-windows keyboards.

noirnws,

Thanks, I definitely hate it?

The fuck is a copilot key and why do I need it on my keyboard, hmm let’s see…

whofearsthenight,

Copilot is their AI thing (which I think is just a wrapper for ChatGPT.) As for why you need it, fuck if I know. Love MS just adding another key that’s going to piss me off when I’m in a game.

fne8w2ah,

Ah, the new sole button to summon the AI assistant.

casual_turtle_stew_enjoyer,

Some Microsoft exec: “Hey, remember when TV remotes started getting a dedicated Netflix button?”

This might have been said, but I just see this as a wild attempt to stay relevant and lock people into hardware. Windows is (very, very, slowly) dying gettingworseandshowingpeoplehowbaditis. Gamers are starting to leave for Linux and Proton, which will also only help the Mac gaming market share. Linux on ARM honesty seems like the future for most devices. The corporate world and anything that’s in too deep with Excel is, I feel, the last big hold out.

EDIT: more accurate time scale and less doom and gloom for the future of windows lol

Haha,

Windows is far from dying.

Arkhive,

I do (perhaps sadly) agree with you, just think there is some more nuance to it than that. See my reply to the other comment if you want to see my thoughts.

adonis88,

Sometimes comments seem to reflect the desires of the commenters rather than an accurate reflection of reality. “Gamers are starting to leave for Linux and Proton” is an example of this because it is obviously the wish of the commenter and contrary to what is happening in the real world.

Arkhive, (edited )

Fair. I definitely did not acknowledge my own bias. There are numbers showing the growth of Linux in both gaming and general. The steam deck alone is showing many people, including hardware manufacturers, the power of linux. That is directly pushing and growing the portable gaming market, which takes market share away from Windows. This will continue to grow, and I believe negative sentiment towards the bloated experience the vast majority of users are getting with Windows is also growing. Hence the “(slowly) dying”, which was meant to be a bit tongue and cheek. I have only anecdotal evidence as far as I have seen quite a few articles about various “features” in the last month, but again within posts from my slice of the internet. One such article was about system popups basically begging you to use Edge, another this change to the keyboard, and one about ads/sponsored links all over the OS.

Obviously Windows still have a massive market share. Never said it didn’t. I just like to believe there’s some cracks showing in the armor.

The “slowly” in parenthesis and “I feel” in my final line of my original post, did not acknowledge the slice of the internet I generally consume content from, which absolutely does have some collective bias against windows.

andrewth09,

Bixby button, but for Windows

LemmyKnowsBest,

Sorry, what did you say? My brain automatically translates that first word to “Useless” every time I see it.

RememberTheApollo_,

I’ll shut that stuff off just like I made every effort to disable Cortana.

It’s unwanted, invasive, and unnecessary.

riodoro1,

Even scroll lock has been used more. Nobody will want your AI crap, microsoft, not even with a dedicated key.

GaMEChld,

Have you played with AI tools yet?

riodoro1,

I use my voice assistant daily, I take pictures with my phone which it retouches with varying results, and I search said pictures with text queries. As for generating bullshit pictures or untrue information, I don’t have much use for that.

GaMEChld,

But can you see how it COULD be useful? How you can be creative with your problem solving? You can use it to spitball ideas to yourself.

richieadler,

All the while the corporations register every idea you spitballed, with the very likely outcome that they will steal whatever of use gets indexed.

GaMEChld,

So? Does that undo the work you accomplished and submitted?

Look, I’m not going to spend more time to convince everyone they are going to screw themselves by being stubborn about AI tools. It’s going to be paradigm shifting tech. It’s the invention of the calculator, the Internet, the smart phone, etc. all over again. If you refuse to learn it, I am very confident you will be left behind, like a coal miner in an old company town.

I’ve already used AI to write functional working code for me. We are already rolling it out in medical practices. My friend are already using it to modify game code without even knowing anything about coding.

It’s a new way to learn and accomplish things. Technology is a tool to be used. If you don’t believe that, why are you using technology at all?

richieadler,

So? Does that undo the work you accomplished and submitted?

If it’s creative work and other people create a whole saga of AI-generated crap with my ideas while I don’t see a dime… I’ve lost.

And all the “successful” scenarios you’ve shown look more like cons and the recipe for shoddy work, so no, I’m not sold.

By the way, weapons are tech also, and I’m also opposed to their use.

GaMEChld,

Ok, well, I hope that works out for you. Really do. Weapons got us where we are today for better or worse. If you pine for a life in the woods, that’s certainly a way to live life. But regardless of what you decide, the tech isn’t going anywhere. And your competitors will be using it. And those who abhor weapons can still die upon them.

richieadler,

And those who abhor weapons can still die upon them.

Did thinking of that image feel good for you?

GaMEChld,

I don’t know what that means. I don’t think we are communicating. Just talking past each other. Be well.

smooth_tea,

Saying nobody wants AI is like saying nobody wants the internet a few decades ago. Before you know it, it’ll be the interface to everything you do with a computer.

Out of interest though, what specifically is it that you don’t like?

riodoro1,

Microsoft. Thats what I dont like.

Oh, and about the internet comparison. The internet was and is actually useful, I don’t see any serious tasks AI assistants are helpful with today. And by the way, there were keyboards with dedicated “internet” keys. I don’t see them nowhere now.

Goblin_Mode,

I can guarantee there is a significant number of people who do want more AI crap.

Hell I can understand why. If it was done ethically and with user privacy as a core tenant of its implementation I would probably love having convenient access to AI tools like that… But this is Microsoft so I think I’m gonna instead go the opposite direction and add this to the list of reasons my next PC will be Linux

TwilightVulpine,

Are we finally going to get the Any key?

sagrotan,
@sagrotan@lemmy.world avatar

How about a key for faster choosing GNU+Linux in GRUB/rEFInd/libreboot? :)

sir_reginald,
@sir_reginald@lemmy.world avatar

It sounds like a good feature to assign a certain key to an option in GRUB. Maybe GRUB has this feature already, it has been a while since I’ve looked into it’s config options.

No need for a dedicated key in the physical keyboard tho, just let the user choose, Alt or Space are good options.

jasondj,

How many people has the context key on their keyboard? Or scroll lock? Or F6-F9 and F11?

Plenty of other options out there. Even keyboard-centric people rarely use those keys unless they have an app that explicitly uses it.

zingo, (edited )

Oh no! That will fuck up my muscle memory!

Oh wait!

I don’t use Winblows! Ufa!

Edit: seriously though, this whole AI super spyware baked into Windows is a privacy violation on a whole different level.

Too bad most ppl don’t give a fuck.

spikederailed,

My only regret is that I don’t have more computers to move away from Windows.

zingo,

Hehehe. Good one.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

As it stands right now, at least on my laptop, it requires Edge, it’s not a stand alone app. So I guess that’s a bonus. I’m never in Edge unless it’s for testing and it’s been ages since I needed to see a scenario in Edge. :)

willis936,

>see headline

“Oh cool. What fun and inventive thing is Microsoft doing?”

>reads first line of article

“Oh it’s for AI. Gross.”

time_fo_that,
Honytawk,

Reading this thread, you’d think Microsoft was fucking the mothers of the commenters here because they dare to add an other button they won’t use on a handful of keyboards …

Nobody is forcing you to upgrade the keyboard you already have.

And if you do buy a new one, you can just put on a different keycap or just put a sticker on it if it bothers you that much. Any decent OS will let you disable it software-wise.

crackajack,

Who woulda thunk Lemmy users is a bunch of tech nerds!

jj4211,

Biggest issue I could see is, as pictured, it replaces a Ctrl key with an unwanted key. Now after a bit of contemplation, I personally never use that one so I don’t have a horse in the race. But I could understand if someone did latch on to that they may be pissed their preferred ctrl key is lost to a pointlessly prominent copilot key.
