It looks like this was asked in a GIMP forum, […] It’s super rude to ask that in that forum.

Why? Just because you’re using a forum for a piece of software, presumably because you want to receive or offer help on using the software for the most part, doesn’t mean you’re obsessed with it and hate all other alternatives that exist.

It’s software, not a religion. These people need some perspective.

Imagine being in a community where being asked about alternatives is considered extremely rude. What a weird group of cult-like obsessives that would be. Creepy o.O

Also regarding why one would ask GIMP users about alternatives, theoretically these would be the best people to ask for GIMP alternatives. They presumably know the software well, and have probably tried alternatives (because they’re not obsessive weirdos that worship a single brand image their whole lives), and can give good answers on what alternatives exist and how they compare to GIMP in its current feature set.

They may even actively use multiple softwares on a regular basis. There’s no law against using GIMP and one or two similar pieces of software that perhaps have slightly different features or are better at one thing vs another.

It’s not rude to put a reasonable question about a piece of software and how it exists in the ecosystem to a group that knows a lot about that software. It isn’t a sacred holy cult object of worship. It’s just a program.

mmm that confused and then annoyed me too, 32c is far, far, FAR from 100c.

The content of this article is important, it’s something that is a huge problem and I’m glad I’ve been further informed and educated, but outright lies and sensationalist titles are confusing at best, and always annoying.

Just give me the information, article writers, without trying to turn it into clickbait. Thank you.

An election to change governments away from one that I feel has been greatly damaging to the nation and my life should be a happy occasion.

Yet, I look at the alternative in our two party system, the new government, Labour, that will undoubtedly get voted in (unless they somehow catastrophically implode within the next few weeks, getting caught sacrificing goats during an orgy at Stonehenge or something)… is basically just a slightly different shade of Tory.

That’s not to say everyone in the party is, or that they’re identical, but enough are, especially the ones in power, and while small things will change for the better, Labour, like the Tories, are too far gone to actually fix any of the underlying issues we face.

Are they going to reverse privatisation of the failing NHS, failing water suppliers, failing rail infrastructure, etc etc? Of course not. Are they going to stand up for unions, workers rights, and our rights to protest? Of course not.

Are they going to begin the long slow process of rejoining the EU, which was such a huge benefit to the UK and yet was taken away through brainwashing, misinformation, and good ol’ right wing racism, a process that I will only see come to fruition within my lifetime if started right now? Of course not. They can’t anger the right wing portion of their following that they’ve been slowly building since dropping the guise of being an even slightly to the left of centre political party.

They’re certainly not going to go against big what big business and the rich want, because those are the groups keeping the ruling class of the nation - including the government - in power, and in the lap of luxury, both now and when they leave office and move on to a private paycheque full-time.

Notice how both parties harp on about “the economy”, (as well as the media that tells us all what to think - owned by the rich), and do everything they can to make it happy and healthy, but do nothing at all to address the growing - now utterly gigantic - distribution of wealth gap between the rich and the majority of us, which stretches much further than simply poor wages - it affects what we have access to, what job and education opportunities we have, how healthy we are, who we’re able to meet and spend time with…it affects everything, and it’s all being ignored in favour of helping “the economy”.

They tell us that a strong economy will bring us all prosperity, that somehow the billions in profits made by the rich will drip down into our teacups for us to lick up, but the reality is that the businesses they serve just find more ways and excuses to raise prices, reduce service quality, cut wages, and get more payouts.

The current government is the worst of the lot, to be sure, and I’m glad they’re going soon. But I’m sad, because I know we won’t get any real change in this election. Just a chance of colour scheme, and a shuffling around of minor priorities and allocations for services, which will make some people happy, as it will appear as if the new government are truly changing things…

But it’s akin to rearranging the furniture in a house that’s on fire. It might feel fresh and better for a few people for a short time, but the whole thing is still burning down in the background.

Probably because the heat from the fire will keep “the economy” nice and warm.

:-(

They discovered that, in the last glacial period, Earth experienced its highest CO2 increase: 14 parts per million in just 55 years. Not, our planet experiences that increase every five years.

I’ve been reading this and just can’t get my head around the last bit. What are they trying to say? O.o

Decentralized Systems Will Be Necessary To Stop Google From Putting The Web Into Managed Decline (www.techdirt.com)

Is Google signaling the end of the open web? That’s some of the concern raised by its new embrace of AI. While most of the fears about AI may be overblown, this one could be legit. But it doesn’t mean that we need to accept it....

Not what you or the Supreme Court thinks.

Phew, good thing the courts in the USA - (a country with sadly laughable protections for people’s rights compared to other large developed regions like the EU) - are the only courts in the world, and what they do is the only thing that matters.

Thanks for telling us all what we think, by the way. Where would we be without an American telling us all what we think?

We’re so lucky.

Damn, imagine scrolling and randomly spotting a lovely painting of a random road in your own city! Just normal boring everyday places, like a car park, haha. Amazing.

These are great, though it still annoys me that the Palace Hotel clocktower signage has been swapped out to say Principal in the past few years :-(

Thank you for sharing these, I’m glad there are artists capturing the normal sights of places instead of focusing on the most impressive and amazing parts of the world, you know?

Love from Manchester ❤️

Check it out! Technology survived a Carrington Event

Nope, that wasn’t remotely powerful enough to be compared to Carrington.

For such an event, we’d have to take preemptive measures to protect our power grids by mostly shutting then down and cutting various interconnects temporarily until the danger had passed, for example.

That’s pretty much the definition of the job of parent. To control everything around the child and how they interact with things.

It’s not any more difficult than it ever was. For one thing, don’t give kids a smartphone until they’re at least 13, they have no need for one before then.

Similarly, up to that age, they should be taught how to use a computer and the internet, but only in a closely monitored, safe manner.

After 13 or there abouts, they are given more freedom and more responsibility to go along with it, and hopefully have been raised well enough to respect that.

From there, limitations and guide rails will remain in place, be it a traditional curfew in the evening, or a limitation of “screen time”, and if course of what the children interact with online.

Greater autonomy is earned through positive actions and mutual respect, too. Over time as they approach adulthood you will be able to loosen restrictions and worry less, as the strong person you’ve helped raise will be able to make their own decisions with greater confidence and more positive outcomes.

Mistakes will be made on all sides along the way, there will be joy, sorrow, anger, love, parenting is a learning experience for all parties, but in the end, if all goes well, you’ll have a well adjusted young adult who isn’t addicted to their mobile phone or any of the apps contained within, who understands the dangers of such things, and how easily addictions and a warping of reality within the mind can set in.

Eventually you have to let go, let them be adults and make their own decisions, but by then they’ll have this deep understanding of the dangers they face, and that’s the best defence they can have.

It still might not be enough, but all you can do as a parent is try to prepare them, from then on they have to make their own mistakes, you know?

Anyway yeah, that’s how I think about it :-)

There’s very few products which everyone can objectively say are designed for killing.

Agreed, it’s very rare, guns are absolutely one of those things though. They’re the perfect evolution of the personal handheld killing tool. You just point it at the thing you want dead, push the button, and you’ve got a good chance of deadding it immediately with your first try.

Guns don’t have a secondary use, like how a knife can whittle a tree branch into a nice spoon, or cut some thread, or skin an animal. Guns cause massive damage to whatever they are pointed at, and sometimes to the things around that thing too, if you’re particularly unlucky.

They’re the solution to a problem when you need the solution to be “escalate this situation to 1000% and start killing stuff”.

Gun manufacturers who say they’re made for defence and not killing must be delusional or confused about what their products do, or just lying to their potential customers for… who even knows what reason.

They are made to defend yourself by killing the person you need to be defended from. Pure and simple. They are truly as cut and dry a tool for killing things as there is.

Nobody is out there shooting people defensively with some non-lethal mode built in to their high speed projectile metal lumps that tear through the human body, causing parts of it to explode and massive trauma to the surrounding tissues and organs.

Do guns exist that fire beanbags, or tranquilliser darts, or such? Absolutely, but none of us here are talking about those types of more specialist guns. We’re talking about your standard gun, the kind they sell to lots of civilians in countries like the USA.

“the answer to child poverty, ultimately, is not simply about handouts, it is about a social security safety net, that also acts as a springboard that helps people into work and with good work that makes the cost of living affordable for everyone.”

Holy crap, a politician that actually gets it, for once? Someone that actually understands that a strong foundation of social services will uplift the nation, making them healthier, happier, better educated, safer, etc, and thus more productive, more successful, more able to give back to the state to help support those very services and uplift the quality of the entire nation?

…Does he know that his party is basically at best a Centrist/Center-Right ‘Tory Lite’ these days? He won’t see a strong government run social system under either of the main parties, alas :-(

Labours would be slightly less ineffectual than the Tories, but they’re still just slightly shuffling things around to look like they’re doing something, whilst lining their pockets and focusing only on helping the economy (aka the rich). As opposed to focusing on helping their actual citizens, which in turn will help the economy.

Still, it’s amazing to see someone actually understand the situation for once and admit it publicly. It almost gives me hope!

That’s not what the quote you posted says, it says it tackles that two things, not that it makes them illegal.

It does mention some things that are to be made criminal offences right before this bit though, to trick people into posting such headlines, I suspect.

This whole thing sucks anyway, but I think we could use some clarity on exactly what will be made illegal?

Why are you censoring Donald Trump’s name? Is it a swear word now in your country?

mmm, it’ll be a cold day in hell before I call them Meta, it’s a very transparent attempt to psychologically reset our opinion of them, as if we’re all stupid.

It’s insulting how thick they think we are.

They’re Facebook. Call yourselves “We didn’t do evil stuff we’re good guys honest” I still won’t believe you …

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying “woke”, “critical race theory”, ““grooming””, and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

It’s worth noting that you’re looking at conservatives from a USA perspective, which is valid and very informative, it’s just that OP didn’t specify a country, so it might also be worth discussing conservative vs liberal culture in places like Europe too, or perhaps prefacing your wonderfully detailed response with something to clarify that when you’re talking about conservatives, you mean a very specific subset of them (as opposed to, say, the conservatives of the UK, where their political party is itself called the Conservative Party).

Rock on! :-D
