After the first two (good) songs I had to check if I was really listening to the correct album, because I thought I'd accidentially put on Paradise Lost 🤔
Show recap! 2/2 Katatonia was soooo good. They played most of my favorites. I was crossing my fingers for something from Brave Murder Day but no... A girl can hope. The lead singer looks like Snape. My only complaint was the guitars and vocals needed to be a touch louder. I know they're even recorded that way but live the drums and bass were SO loud. Could have been the venue too. Worth the 3 hour drive!
You know when Sam Dunn rated Mastodon's Emperor Of Sand really bad and was dissapointed, only to name it his album of rhe year 2017 and even album of the decade later on?
Well, I am still at "Why does everyone like #Katatonia so much?".
I listened to Sky Void Of Stars (for some AOTY) 3 times, their "best of" a couple of times, saw them live. Nothing.
#Katatonia is strong with openers on their albums, you could trivially build a playlist of bangers just selecting those songs.
Today I'm taken by the cold open of "Takeover". The very first sounds you hear when you put the album on is already a bridge with the band in full swing. It's surprising, very well executed, drops you right into the scene.
Now in the age of TikTok, it's a less surprising move. But for a metal band from the 1990s, that was definitely unexpected!

In all fairness: #Katatonia sounded great, they had by far the best sound and I was impressed that they're only a 3 piece with a singer. I expected 3 guitars...
But well, some things aren't meant to be.
If you are a fan, I bet you'll have a great time seeing them live.
