Good morning Mastodonians! Whew, I've had a crazy morning already...it's raining, getting windy, and I had to go supervise the setup of porta-johns at the Roadeo course first thing. Still waiting to hear from the tent people. Thankfully it's to be clear tomorrow, so we'll have a good day to run buses through our course.

How're all my friends & followers today?

And what's a Roadeo, you ask? It's a competition for bus drivers from around the state, testing their abilities. It includes a safety inspection, proper mobility device securement, and an obstacle course that drivers must negotiate safely. This all promotes safety and skill in the world of public transit, and the winners go on to a national competition.

Hopping on a #bus to return to your #hometown during #festive #holidays may soon become a thing of the past if nothing is done to halt the declining number of bus drivers

With at least 5,000 #vacancies to fill, it has been suggested that the government offer free #training to those interested in becoming #busdrivers

The #shortage was expected to become more severe with each passing year

Disastrous first day back to school in Louisville, KY, USA.

The Louisville school district hired a consulting firm to redesign school bus routes using algorithms.

The result was a "logistical meltdown...forcing schools to close."

The school district blames driver shortages.

Full-time district drivers work 184 days per year at a $22.78 starting hourly wage, benefits optional (whatever that means). At 8 hours per day, that works out to $33,532 per year.

Substitute drivers make $21 per hour, no benefits.

Seems like those "driver shortages" might be self-inflicted.
