The phenomenon is called "root pressure", the roots of a plant "pushing" water and nutrients up the plant in normal conditions, along with transpiration pull. It is made visible when the stem is cut, water still circulating in the plant for a while.
Watching anything grow from a seed makes us happy.
My husband watches the progress of every tuber and bulb on our property. So I decided to start an avacado seed he could watch in the house in the windowsill. I hadn't sprouted one since my kids were little.
Pretty exciting development that now we have leaves! Eventually, he can pamper it as our newest house plant.
I told him we could get out our cold frame and start some annuals in April.
We all need something to look forward to.
@NorcalGma2 Seeing seeds sprout and shoots start to grow is so beautiful and cheering! For the past several winters, I grew microgreens on the windowsill, as much for that feeling as for the fresh food. For some reason, I haven't been doing that this winter until 3 days ago, when I planted a small tray (I use carry-out food containers). I'll post photos when the seeds have sprouted. Meanwhile, here are amaranth microgreens from a couple of summers ago. #microgreens
@NorcalGma2 Amaranth is easily the most beautiful type of microgreens that I'm aware of. I saw an unlabeled photo of them several years ago and said to myself that I had to find out what they were and grow some. :) Here's a photo of a salad made from home-grown pea shoots and canned mandarin oranges and garnished with home-grown amaranth microgreens. #microgreens
HA! Auf meiner Fensterbank geht es gerade ab. Wie gut, dass ich meinen Sprossenturm wieder in Betrieb genommen habe, ich liebe frisches Grün einfach zu allem und brauche gleich mehrere aberntbare Etagen. Aktuell: Brokkoli, Grünkohl und Rotkohl und unten wächst wieder Brokkoli nach.
In den Plastikschalen hab ich Koriander, Ingwer und Kurkuma. Letztere beiden kann ich auch bald umtopfen, der Koriander ist in ein paar Tagen erntereif und wird schnell weggefuttert sein. #microgreens#sprossen
Hab vergessen, wie lange der #Koriander braucht um so "groß" zu werden, da muss ich dringend wieder was nachpflanzen. Nach diesem WE ist der weg 🪴 :blobcatgiggle:
#Ingwer und #Kurkuma Update: Jetzt muss ich noch mal nachlesen wie tief ich die Wurzeln einpflanzen sollte beim Umtopfen. Da noch ein paar ganz klitzikleine grüne Triebe an den Wurzeln zu sehen sind, warte ich aber noch ein bisschen, die will ja nicht komplett ver- und vielleicht begraben.
