Where did you download it? I couldn’t find it on GitHub Releases.

True, the Linux app (both the old and the new one) sucks to the point, where I gave up and just put my Linux PC behind a network-wide VPN (which is set up using a Wireguard profile)

I agree

I have a custom x86 Router/Firewall running the BSD-based OPNSense Firewall OS. Setting up Proton VPN is pretty simple, they even have a guide: protonvpn.com/…/protonvpn-opnsense-wireguard/

SMS and iMessage.

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

SMS used to be the standard way of messaging people on a cellphone. Since a European country is about the size of one US state, it’s pretty common to have friends, family or other people you have to message in another European country. Many carriers still charge additional fees for sending SMS messages to other EU countries. So Europeans needed some way of messaging people in other countries for free. That’s where WhatsApp came in, it’s designed for phones and simpler to use than Email. In 2013, WhatsApp was bought by Facebook, which later became Meta. It’s basically the same for other countries that rely on WhatsApp, they need to send messages to foreign countries frequently, which can become quite expensive when using SMS. Americans never needed WhatsApp, because they don’t have to message people in foreign countries as often as Europeans, and they often have unlimited SMS included in their cell plans.

Yeah that was in 2018. But WhatsApp was already by far the most popular messenger by then.

Yo wtf, these prices are crazy

Yes. From their website:

C library diversity

Void Linux supports both the musl and GNU libc implementations, patching incompatible software when necessary and working with upstream developers to improve the correctness and portability of their projects.

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Many programs aren’t packaged for Void though

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

They are likely referring to musl. Patches might be needed for some programs to work with musl.

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

But the Void Linux team specifically wants to support both glibc and musl

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Tell me more about it. Let’s say I have an Arch (AUR) package that I want to repackage for Void, how do I do it?

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Thanks for the explanation. How does xbps-src handle dependencies? I.e. does it somehow detect the dependencies in the original package and find corresponding Void Linux packages? What about dependency versions? What happens if a dependency is not available in the Void repos?

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Thank you very much for this in-depth explanation. I will definitely consider Void as my next distro of choice.

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ll put it on a spare SSD on my PC tomorrow. By any chance, is it possible to install Void on an Apple Silicon MacBook? I’m really annoyed by Fedora Asahi and I’m looking for a better distro to put on it.

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I really wouldn’t recommend it on a laptop if you want to use it as a portable, battery-powered device.

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I think the normal GNOME Terminal still uses GTK 3

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Then maybe try Tilix? It’s very similar to the GNOME Terminal emulator (it includes some extra features) and it definitely uses GTK3

Andromxda,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ok that’s weird. Might be Wayland related, I only tried it on Xorg.

This is BS, half of it is pure speculation, the other half consists of conspiracy theories.
