Speed grid today. Even used a current player, which is odd for me.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

Weird that a current player popped into my head, but Gold Glove/Cleveland was Myles Straw and not some odd ‘70s guy.

I love veteran starting pitchers that reinvent as relievers. Greg Swindell is one.

Surprised Whittaker’s such a high %.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

Went back and looked and wow! I think Rick Manning was an OF-3 in APBA, but I wouldn’t have thought of him. Ray Fosse would never have occurred to me; the Pete Rose incident is all I knew, nothing about his glove.

But if I’d thought of Graig Nettles I absolutely would have picked him and been wrong. Only started winning Gold Gloves at the Yankees. Narrow escape today.

MediaLawProf, to random

Once my Mets 20 wins square came in at 6%, I just went out and remembered some guys from the ‘80s. But I’ve got a 19th-century legend, a guy who wrote 2 books I’ve read, a guy whose jersey I sometimes wear, and a classic case of the yips in there. Rarity of 13. No Al Oliver :(

@MediaLawProf The Ken Phelps All-Stars! May need to read some old Bill James stuff today.

Okay, I’m proud of this one!

8 of 9 played 3B for the Cincinnati Reds!
6 were the main starter at 3B for a full season.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@Baseball

Encarnacion, Rolen, Fernández, Buddy Bell, Sabo, and Johnny Bench we’re all the main starting 3B for the Reds over a full season.

Frank Robinson started 8 games at 3B for the Reds in 1958. Curt Flood got his first cup of coffee with the Reds before a very bad trade. He played 4 innings at third for the Reds. Only Vince Coleman never played 3B in his (brief) time as a Red.

Pete Rose & Tommy Helms were also RoY/All Stars and Reds starting 3B.

Just some fast fun favorites today.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@Baseball
Pepe Frias. Braves on the Superstation in the late 70s early 80s is how I became a fan.

Some other names that came to mind:
Al Oliver (of course), Mike Jorgensen, Jim Kern, Oscar Gamble, Denny Martinez, and Bruce Chen.

MediaLawProf, to random

There will be a day when the Dallas Morning News stops calling me with offers to subscribe again, especially when I tell them I won’t even consider it until the editorial board retracts its endorsement of Greg Abbott. But today is not that day.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf At least they’re still trying to gain customers. When I unsubscribed from the Tallahassee Democrat a few years ago, I never ever heard from them again. It’s like they’ve given up. Sold off their building. Print in Panama City now I think. I’m not even sure where their office is in Tallahassee. Slow, managed death of journalism.

MediaLawProf, to random

No rarity chasing today, so just went with some fun guys - including Al Oliver, of course! While the Rangers were fun, I was happiest with the Brewers/Braves square.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf
Knew you’d have Al Oliver in the center square place of honor. Cheers! All is right with the world.*

  • I mean, no it isn’t, obviously. We’re in the worst timeline.
MediaLawProf, to random

Welp, I was bound to mess up at some point. Chose a guy who had 30 steals and played for the Twins but not at the same time. If I’d stuck with first instinct (an old Senators guy) and went with my gut on that M’s/Padres square my rarity would’ve been more like 11. As it is, an ugly 113.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf Who was the mistake? “Inquiring minds want to know!” he said to the Media Law professor. Was it Denard Span?

MediaLawProf, to random

No rarity chasing today in with limited choices in those 500 homer / 40 homer squares. I’ll take my 33. No Al Oliver but I’m done playing Rangers after another gut-punch disaster last night.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf I’m starting to think I’m the only mastadonian who didn’t use Reggie Jackson in the Orioles/500HR square.

Also, Terry Forster makes me VERY happy. Do you remember his David Letterman appearance? “Weight, 210.” “Fat tub of goo.”

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf
Jeff Bagwell? Never heard of him.
Richard Hidalgo, 100%! What?!
I think I’ll keep playing later; that’s just too odd.

Also, man I miss Letterman.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf Same here. Dropping stuff of a 4-story building, stupid human tricks, anything involving Chris Elliot. Just delightful silliness.

MediaLawProf, to random

This morning, @JeremyLittau texted to comment that the Marlins .300 square was where rarity goes to die. I gambled on a guy I was pretty sure was .300 career there and got lucky. I’ll take the 7 rarity with some fun guys & former Rangers around. The Al Oliver drought continues…

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf @JeremyLittau Any grid with Cliff Johnson is a good grid. He had a couple nice APBA cards back in the day.

Good call on Piazza; I went Alou for the lower rarity, thinking Ichiro, Cabrera, and Piazza would get all the attention. But Alou at 3% and Piazza at 5% is yet more proof I will never anticipate the rarity scores correctly.

Today’s theme is Reds prospects!

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@Baseball
So all but Moises Alou and Felipe Lopez were prospects with the Reds before moving on. Reggie Jefferson could hit. Always thought Willie Greene would figure it out at the plate, but man that glove was lead.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf @Baseball He’s from Tallahassee, where I live, and a Reds prospect, so I’m oddly aware of him. Hal Morris and Sean Casey are also .300 career guys. Sadly Votto isn’t anymore.

MediaLawProf, to random

Forgot to post yesterday - got a 3 rarity with a couple of guys (Ruffin & Householder) I’d wanted to use for awhile. No Al Oliver but got a Doc Medich appearance as obligatory fun old Ranger.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf Hey! I’d been sitting on Householder too and then did a quick grid and forgot him and used Glen Braggs instead. Anyway, nice grid!

Well that went horribly wrong! Much like when I learned Nolan Ryan never won a Cy Young Award.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@Baseball
Today I learned That Eddie Mathews never won an MVP — he was runner-up twice. Oops!

Otherwise going great. Moved to Philly in 1997 and watched too many “starting CF Midre Cummings” games. Just looked it up and there were only 50 of them. I assure you it seemed like a lot more at the time. Wow, statistically it might have been the best stretch of his career.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf @Baseball Live and learn. I liked your Jeff Burroughs pick in the SE corner. I briefly considered Willie Hernandez, but I like getting black and white photos and had to use the somewhat obscure Red.

Opening mandatory attendance college breakfast followed by daylong department “retreat” to another building on campus - shuffle has captured my mood

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@Bodling @MediaLawProf This times a thousand! That’s not a retreat it’s a surrender.

MediaLawProf, to random

Once I burned 7% on the northeast corner I just played for fun, dropping in some ‘80s names I’d wanted to for awhile. No Al Oliver today. Wound up with 14 rarity.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf It’s funny, I used Wilber Wood in the NE corner and got 9% expecting much lower; so I went ahead and used 70s favorites J.R. Richard & John Candelaria.

And the whole time I was thinking, “should have used Cicotte, he would have been a lot lower.”

I’m never going to gauge rarity scores correctly.

MediaLawProf, to random

If I had to do it again, I’d move the guy in my SE corner over one square to put another Ranger in. Wound up with a 31 rarity, including obligatory Al Oliver appearance.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf As soon as I see the Rangers logo I look forward to seeing who you have. Ted Kubiak! Nice! Had to look up Nivar, hadn’t heard of him.
