We all have biases. Every single one of us.

They're shortcuts, heuristics, and rules of thumb that help us navigate a complex world. Our brains are wired for them.

https://joanwestenberg.com/blog/the-bias-trap

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan Reminds me of a Joan Didion quote from The White Album:

We tell ourselves stories in order to live...We look for the sermon in the suicide, for the social or moral lesson in the murder of five. We interpret what we see, select the most workable of the multiple choices. We live entirely, especially if we are writers, by the imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images, by the "ideas" with which we have learned to freeze the shifting phantasmagoria which is our actual experience.

Reading about Post Malone and Michael Bay's collab on a film about an 18-wheeler from heaven going back in time to England in the middle ages to defeat hordes of demonic zombies took me from eye-roll to "huh. I kinda want to see that..." in record time.

That happened to me last week, and since my wife was out of town and I lacked adult supervision . . .

It’s cool how schools can’t punish pro-Nazi students because of the First Amendment but can mass arrest and suspend anti-war students because what First Amendment?🤔

A headline that says 108 pro Palestine students have been arrested and suspended for protesting the siege on Gaza.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid

The first story refers to a government school district that has to respect the first amendment.

The second story refers to Columbia University, a private institution that does not have the same restrictions.

Conflating them as “schools” is misleading your followers. And yeah, Columbia should sure as hell do better.

I’m really curious, which Fleming?

Was a teenage boy years ago and read them all. Only “The Spy Who Loved Me” has really stuck with me. Tight little action/noir if I remember it right. The short stories were pretty good too.

Hope your muse is good to you!

I actually live in Florida and have to deal with the results of policies these schmucks install. Can’t stand these guys. However . . .

Given that Surgeon General Ladapo is African-American (literally born in Nigeria), perhaps call him something other than “witch doctor” because honestly it smacks of racism. I don’t want this guy to have any room to claim the moral high ground, since his policy choices will end with dead children.

Calling him a “quack” I think is the better option.

    A thing I wrote in a recent draft:

    "...on the team side, the reality of team practices that claim to be autonomous at large organizations is that supposed independence of action is frequently sustained by senior members or managers “protecting” their teams from external dependencies and taking on the work of advocacy as individual responsibility (Moe et al., 2019; Hicks, et al 2023)."

    I think this is a big point with large psychological implications although software journals, alas, did not

    ArthurCopeland4,
    @ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

    @grimalkina
    This makes me think of the sap in Office Space whose job is to “take the specs from the customers and give them to the (software) engineers.”

    The movie makes him look a fool (“what would you say it is you do here”) and he may personally be ineffectual, but he’s not organizationally wrong. He also seems psychologically damaged by serving as a buffer for who knows how many years.

    I just got an interesting question about text on menus.

    It bothers the questioner when things aren't capitalized on menus or there's no punctuation.

    I think they want me to say menus should follow standard English rules, but I've never been able to get worked up about menus. The "errors" or pretentious formatting are all just part of the restaurant experience to me.

    What do you think about text styling on menus?

    ArthurCopeland4,
    @ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

    @grammargirl
    Did graphic design for many years and have helped a restaurant-owner friend with his menu layout. Voted “Anything Goes” because holy crap, menus!

    Menus are a cavalcade of competing needs and priorities. Max info, min space, legibility, clarity of content, user limitations, lighting, “specials”, branding, etc.

    Have pity on the menu designer. Unless it’s a complete disaster, know they suffered too.

    I’d rather do a 64-page annual report than another front & back menu.
