After a week of conferencing, I’m back on . Rarity of 17 today with some fun Rangers (and two Senators). Regretting not using a fun lefty swingman from UT in that Phils-Rockies square.

@MediaLawProf No Al Oliver?!? Are you feeling okay? :-)

Wish I’d used Dale Murphy!

@MediaLawProf And Jeff Stone at 0.004% is worth the wait.

MediaLawProf, to random

Crazy today! Hard to get rarity too low so I loaded up on favorites & former Rangers (especially my Silver Slugger row). I’ll take that 43 rarity.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf I see we had similar notions. In future I might do more theme grids.

Have you run across the “Immaculate Talk” podcast yet? They’ve started to experiment with the game and Joe Sheehan is a smart baseball guy.

That was quick. Texas A&M is paying Kathleen McElroy $1 million to settle claims after right-wing agitators and ultimately some regents objected to her hiring as journalism program director. https://www.tamus.edu/internal-review/

@MediaLawProf Oh my goodness; I assumed you were paraphrasing. How little sense of history or culture must you have to use that phrase officially? Is the Communications department made up entirely of teenagers, or is this their way of saying, “yes, we work for weasels”?

This is why I can't have nice things. Thought either the late Darryl Kile or Mike Hampton would have 200K, but they were way short. Borrowed Al Oliver since someone always mentions him, and had been looking to pencil in VanderWal for a while.

@MediaLawProf @beisbolcards Dang that’s a nice grid. Those Reds are nice deep pulls, but 40+ years later those 1982 Reds still cause me trauma.

Open trivia question

Who is the player with the longest career that will never be an answer in the

Someone who played his whole career with one team, won no awards and didnt have benchmark stats.

My pick for now is Randy Bush, who played for the Twins from 1982-1993. There's gotta be someone else.

ArthurCopeland4,

@beisbolcards I can improve it by one year: Ron Oester, 1978-1990 with the Reds.

Always like using Fernando. Templeton all the way up at 9% was a surprise. Wonder what Ozzie’s % was. How many of us thought we were oh-so-clever doing the other side of the trade?

MediaLawProf, to random

Not a great day for rarity chasing in with that 40+ homer category, so I abandoned that and took my 43 rarity by putting in some fun guys - including, in the Giants-Angels spot, the guy whose jersey I pledged to wear while running a marathon if the Rangers won the World Series in 2010. (they did not)

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf And now they’re in first place! They were actually waiting for you to run the marathon.

Decided to go rarity chasing in today and set a PR with 2! The Marlins are always dicey for me. No Al Oliver today, alas.

@MediaLawProf @beisbolcards Oh my gods, Kurt Stillwell was an All-Star!! Cliff Johnson is a great memory too!

Thank you for this, your grid is tremendous.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf @beisbolcards As a Reds fan, I must have known Stillwell was an All-Star in 1988. But Danny Jackson was also an All-Star, on his way to 23 wins, and looked like a lock for the Cy Young at the time (until Orel Hershiser went on his scoreless innings streak). So I wasn’t worried a bit about losing Stillwell.

MediaLawProf, to random

After a rainy score of 3 yesterday, I was back up to 24 today - but with a combination of an expansion team column and a limited pool of career stats row, this wasn’t a day for low rarity anyway. And after 3 straight days of Al Oliver as a good answer, we’ve had 3 straight without. Sad.

So yeah, had to try it. I was a football obsessed little kid in the 1970s and still collect OLD football cards. It show in my selections. As a U of Miami family, George Mira really did seem obvious to me. God I’m old.

Also, apparently some other site already grabbed the obvious name “immaculate gridiron” — that’s disappointing.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

I quit following NFL closely in early 1990s (in retrospect I think it was the West Coast offense that drove me off.). It shows.

I’m in Tallahassee and I’m a Cincinnati Reds fan, so yeah, Deion Sanders. Nobody else came to mind. Should I have remembered Fulton Kuykendall’s 1 game at the 49ers? Maybe? Mike Moroski, maybe?

They really didn’t share anyone interesting. Maybe because they were division rivals, Atlanta famously being in the west.

ArthurCopeland4,
@ArthurCopeland4@mastodon.social avatar

@MediaLawProf I was a deeply obsessed kid and still collect the old Topps football cards; recently completed a couple late 1950s sets.

But I really have been a 4 or 5 games a year fan for the last 20 years. All my grids are likely to look like this and I will absolutely have no idea about the newer teams. It will be ugly! I’ll probably post a couple just to display my ignorance and then I’ll stop.

Just noticed the box for Astros/Nationals today had a correct rate of only 35%! That’s the lowest I’ve ever noticed.

The most frequent correct answer was Will Harris at 18%

I’d bet a large number of people conflated the careers of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer! They both starred with the Tigers and are now Mets. In between, Verlander was an Astro and Scherzer was a National.

More than ever I want to know the most frequently wrong answer!

A dive down the baseball-reference rabbit hole last night inadvertently prepped me for a personal best rarity score this morning in . If you put Rangers, Astros & Expos in the same puzzle, that’s hitting my sweet spot.
