One thing about the web is that it requires you relinquish control.

If you're a government, you can't control the flow of information.

If you're a designer, you can't control the exact placement of pixels.

If you're a developer, you can't control how content will flex and bend across devices, inputs, etc.

If you want to work with the web, give up the idea of control and your expectations will be properly set from the outset (which helps you avoid disappointment and/or disillusionment).

Chris,

@jimniels When responsive design took over, we had no choice but to let go of pixel perfection, and embed some variability. Now, with container queries, it’s the same, but to an infinite degree. I find it freeing, even if it means I have to explain it all over again to people. It also means that every component has the potential to be far more complex than Figma could ever possibly represent.

@cdevroe 8Bitdo Ultimate is awesome all around. I used it last night, and it worked great. https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-bluetooth-controller/

8Bitdo SN30 Pro is also great, but has minor issues with D-pad rocking. Basically, if you’re pressing down, and you put pressure to the side, you can trigger left or right on the D-pad. It’s a pretty common issue with controllers actually, but I still recommend it because it’s really nice overall. https://www.8bitdo.com/sn30-pro-g-classic-or-sn30-pro-sn/

@daringfireball I remember seeing him at the Online News Association meeting in 2015 or 16. He was in the hotel lobby, doing what could only be described as holding court.

If you see the word "yummy" in a Yelp review, avoid that restaurant entirely. It clearly attracts a certain type of person that you don't want to be associated with.

The desk in my hotel room is 30.5" tall, which is about six inches higher than it should be with this chair.

Losing circulation in your hands because your keyboard is at chest height is rad. All the cool kids are doing it.

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

Either the person who designed this desk was eight feet tall, or they're unfamiliar with what desks are for.

"The precipitous decline in traffic to conservative publications raises a larger and possibly unanswerable question: Did these operations ever really hold the political and cultural clout that critics ascribed to them at their peak?" https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/04/conservative-digital-media-traffic/678055/

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz The “media” was just a temporary grift they were able to squeeze out of the disinformation they were actually aiming for. There’s a million AI-generated garbage sites out there to do the job now.

My flight was delayed almost four hours. The fact that this is apparently every other passenger’s first time encountering an airplane is not helping us get off the ground any quicker.

Chris,

This is a 45 minute flight.

@siracusa Supposed one were to find one’s self in Hauppauge for work, and one were to eat at Branchinelli’s… is pizza the call, or something else?

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa Awesome, thank you! Sicilian it is—and garlic knots are definitely on my list because I’m trying to get better at making them and I could use a solid reference point.

Ep611: React! Typescript! Jobification! This episode is guaranteed to get you a job. We also talk about:

  • Is taking a Drupal job in 2024 a good idea
  • Chris got nerdsniped in our #gear channel
  • P3 color pickers!
  • The many File System APIs
  • Are lightboxes still a thing?

@shoptalkshow I strongly endorse the air blower thing. I recently got a similar (non-Nickelodeon) one, and it’s a game changer not just for cleaning computer stuff, but anything that air moves past (fans, space heaters, various filters).

Sweeping generalization incoming:

A comic is 3-5 story beats.
A volume is 3-5 comics rolled up into a single book.
A compendium is 30~50 comics rolled up into a single book.

Anyways, websites (vis a vis information density, features, storytelling, et cetera)

Chris,

@davatron5000 I think see where you’re going with this.

Chris,

@davatron5000 Let me just point this out:

  1. Legit question for rural Americans
  2. how do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs
  3. that run into my yard
  4. within 3-5 mins
  5. while my small kids play?
