Big fan of SBC gaming, open source engine recreations/source ports, gaming in general, alternative operating systems, and all things modding.

Trying to post and comment often in an effort to add to Lemmy’s growth.

Whatever happened to lemmy.film?

It had a few niche communities I would occasionally post to after the Reddit exodus but a couple months later I would post there and get no responses or votes. Going to lemmy.film now gives me an error message. Did they decide to shut it down or combine with another instance similar to FMHY? I am curious if they gave some kind...

I am not looking to fill those niches. I was curious because it was quite popular a while back.

I mostly use Windows games with Lutris and just switch around the executables so I can keep my save games in case I ever want to revisit a title and avoid additional setup steps.

Some megathreads mention a user by the name of JohnCena or something on 1337x but I haven’t tried their releases myself.

I definitely think those count. There’s a few places that list Matanago as unrated as well and I feel like age ratings change with the times.

Thanks for mentioning that.

A lot of good answers. Cloverfield Lane is one of my favorite movies and I had no idea it was rated PG.

If you look at the replies a lot of people are thinking copyright trolls are responsible and it’s not actually Nintendo

I don’t think so. Tetris is still up for example and some SNES games have been taken down. It seems quite sporadic.

Would you not buy it at all or buy it used then mod it afterwards to run your “homebrew” applications?

Fair enough. Most people don’t seem to use Vimm’s Lair for downloading sets. They mostly seem to use it for sporadically downloading a couple titles. Especially for newer systems like the PS3 or Wii for example.

Their labeling of what hasn’t been archived is also neat to see.

I am not sure. There might be a changelog or a reply that has it but I haven’t stumbled across it

Even if it wasn’t trolls it doesn’t sound like they were willing to take the risk

I imagine a lot of people are in that mindset. They want to try out a console that’s a little past it’s prime and not pay collector or new prices for games that are only a few years old.

I mean the piracy community is a hydra, if you cut off one head there’s another waiting, but they do make it annoying. Look at how many websites are hesitant about posting Switch content. It might be a “dragging heels in the sand situation” but it does provide a bit of resistance towards piracy.

All that said I don’t think Nintendo realizes how many people are in the piracy headspace of “they wouldn’t have purchased it even if piracy wasn’t an option”. I imagine a lot of people who pirate Switch games don’t even own a Switch. They just want to play one or two games don’t view the cost of the console and game as worth it.

I feel like they are trying to push Japanese laws regarding piracy and console modding on the rest of the world.

Speaking of which does anyone have a quality article about that recent time where Nintendo’s lawyers showed up at someone’s door and confiscated something? I believe that’s what happened but I could be incorrect.

Searching online I am just finding other examples of Nintendo shenanigans.

Eidt: I was thinking of this story regarding Magic the Gathering Cards and Wizards of the Coast not Nintendo

Thank you! That was it. I guess it sounded like a Nintendo thing to do
