The 87-year-old pontiff reportedly made the homophobic remark in a closed-door meeting last week as he told Italian bishops that gay men shouldn’t be allowed to train for the priesthood.

The newspaper articles, which were translated from Italian, claimed the Pope had said there is “frociaggine” – which translates in English to “faggotry” – in some of the seminaries.

Francis’ comments were made in the context of proposals from the Italian bishops to amend guidelines on candidates to seminaries.

“Faggotry in the Seminary” sounds like a Catholic-themed porno movie from the '80s.

As gross and homophobic as this is, I doubt it cracks the top 1000 worse things the Church has done.

Best Buy Membership "discount" (lemmy.world)

So I was shopping with my wife today and I said “oh let’s see if my membership helps out.” So we went and added the same item to each of our carts, and to our surprise, the total was the same! So what is it exactly that I’m paying for in this membership if the items “original price” is higher for me than it is for...

I still had the thought that it might be something brought about by seeing people they look up to being a certain way and not from internal, intrinsic reasons.

Funnily enough, that’s very similar to the thought process I had regarding masculinity when I came out to myself as non-binary.

Thanks for supporting your kid.

I don’t think they’re saying hills make cycling impossible, I think they’re saying Dutch-style bikes are not the best tool for the job if you live somewhere hilly.

Most of the features of a Dutch-style bike are absolutely great for cycling as transportation regardless of your location, but riding a heavy steel frame with limited gearing? It’s absolutely fine if you ride somewhere mostly flat, but it isn’t a well-adapted bike for inclines.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

As a fellow unicycle owner, the thing I hate the most about it is that I can’t find anywhere to practice riding it where I don’t feel like an attention whore.

I mean I am an attention whore, but I don’t want to feel like it.

If I were you, I’d check around your area for a bike co-op. They often have great deals on used bikes they tuned up, so you’d save money and end up with something as good (or even better!) than entry-level hybrid models. Plus co-ops tend to be staffed by the hugest bike nerds who are sincerely eager to help new cyclists.

If you’d rather buy new, I’d recommend an entry-level (starting at around 600$) hybrid from any of the big bike brands (this advice is a bit location-specific, I’m talking about North America here). I ride a Trek FX1, but all the big bike brands have similarly-featured models.

Whatever you do, please stay away from cheap, big box store bikes. These are usually assembled by people who are not trained bike mechanics and shoddily assembled bikes can easily be dangerous. They also often have non-standard parts, making repairs and maintenance frustrating.

Record company be like:

sudo systemctl disable suicide && systemctl enable chop.suey

Now that DuckDuckGo is out. Give me your search prompts and I'll answer them as best I can. That includes images (based on what I have saved on my PC). So what is it you wish to know or see?

Edit: Due to popular demand FatTony Search servers are down for the time being. but has gone open source just in time (Yes that’s how it works 😡) . You may now get responses from other users. Servers will be back up some time later.

Which addon is that, if you don’t mind sharing?

Evkob, (edited )
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

They’re talking about Real Debrid, which is a subscription service allowing access to hosters and easy conversion of torrents to direct streams. It’s really cheap and absolutely worth the money IMO, but RD doesn’t seed torrents. Distributing content in that manner would get them in heaps of legal trouble.

I guess it does somewhat solve the problem of leeching, as if anyone has streamed a torrent via RD in the past 30 days you’ll just load their cached copy, but I was perhaps naïvely hoping for an actual addon (RD is not an addon but rather can be configured through Torrentio) that somehow seeded torrents I stream.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

This is about trackers as in devices which can geolocate, such as Apple’s airtags, not privacy-invading data collection in apps. Google obviously wouldn’t care to address the latter.

The worse part is, what infrastructure does get built isn’t used because it’s mostly useless, and people use this lack of use as justification for not building more.

My ex taught me how to crochet, which was pretty cool of her. I’ve always wanted to do stuff with yarn and having someone there to guide and correct me was so useful. I’m not sure I would have stuck with it if I tried to learn via online tutorials.

I work in a café, so I usually drink what we have for espresso which is a medium-dark roast from Barista in Montréal

At home, I currently have a bag of medium roast blend from a local roaster, nothing fancy. I’ve been on a French press kick recently, and it does the job.

As someone whose credit card has been at the 5000$ limit for a couple of months, I’d say it’s capitalism that’s unsustainable.

Between groceries, rent, and the occasional treat to make life barely bearable, I don’t have anywhere to cut expenses. My vehicle is a bicycle. I live with three roommates in an old building in a neighbourhood that’s more down-and-leaving than up-and-coming. I only wear thrifted clothes. My diet consists largely of legumes and rice.

I don’t think you had any ill intent with your comment, I feel like you’re coming from a place of empathy, but it does rub me the wrong way and gives me the impression you might be unaware of the realities that many people are living through right now. I’m relatively lucky, I at least have a roof over my head and never go (too) hungry. A lot of people have it much worse.

If you have an actual tip to deal with my debts, I’d be all ears, but I highly doubt cutting the little luxuries I do afford myself (an occasional craft beer, 50$ of weed every two months or so, and a takeout meal or two per month) would suddenly make my situation financially sustainable. It’s the landlords and the grocery-monopolies that are unsustainable.

It’s not about the tuition (although most of our universities are effectively subsidized by foreign students paying higher tuition fees), it’s about having an easily exploitable labour force while they’re here studying. Less familiarity with labour laws and less protections than a citizen make for attractive wage slaves.

Of course, the solution isn’t tightening immigration, but the actual solutions might make the wealthy accumulate riches at a slightly slower pace, therefore it is unimaginable.

Agreed, infantilizing fascists is dangerous. Are most of their supporters just dumb/misinformed? Probably. But we mustn’t pretend that the movement isn’t orchestrated by very smart people manipulating the masses in order to consolidate power in the hands of them and their rich friends.

Does anyone else ever just realize that you're not even sure why you want a relationship at all?

As I’ve gained more and more close friends, more than I’ve ever had in my life, and some closer than I’ve ever had in my life, I’ve come to realize something recently. Despite the prevailing feeling like I want a relationship, I don’t actually know why it is I want one, nor what I have to gain from one....

Evkob,

This may or may not be the case, as people’s experiences rarely map neatly on top of each other, but usually when I perceive others as being too cool to associate with “the peasants”, it’s usually more of an insecurity on my side than an aura of elitism from the person in question. In my mind, the thought is “they’re too cool to hang out with me”, not “they think they’re hot shit”.

Kodi + add-ons is great if you like tinkering, otherwise I would recommend Stremio with the Torrentio add-on. Stremio + Torrentio + Real-Debrid is the easiest way to consume pirated media IMO.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

There is also a Trakt add-on, like the other commenter said the integration isn’t as seamless as a well-maintained Kodi setup, but it’s definitely good enough that I’ve switched from Kodi to Stremio with Trakt being the way I organise my TV/movie watchlists.

That depends on your use case, I personally really only ever use RSS on my phone. Anyway, as others have mentioned, you can connect the app to FreshRSS for syncing.

Also, feel free to ignore this, but you could probably make your point without being so condescending. Something like “Cool, but the lack of apps across multiple platforms is a deal-breaker for me.” Calling someone’s work “cute, but […] useless” after they provide it for free to the community is kinda rude, especially considering it’s honestly one of the best actively-developped RSS apps for Android.

you can’t transition away from just large cars, you still won’t have the carless infrastructure in place anyway

I don’t disagree with this, but that’s not the point I was trying to make. Maybe I wasn’t clear enough, since your paragraph re:veganism addresses an entire other issue than the one I was trying to highlight.

Let me clarify: Vegans, like anti-car folks, are politically extreme compared to the mainstream views. As a vegan, in my ideal world no one would eat meat. Similarly, in my ideal world no one would drive cars. However, we don’t live in my ideal worlds (far from it).

I don’t condone eating meat, nor do I condone driving cars. But for most people, these are normal, everyday things and they get defensive if they feel attacked for doing them.

As an anti-car person, you probably have more in common ideologically with a Prius driver than a Hummer driver. Equating the Prius driver with the Hummer driver is, in my experience, more likely to generate a negative reaction in the Prius driver where they see you as an enemy, and the Hummer as an ally.

I’d rather create more anti-car sentiment than accidentally contribute to motor vehicle solidarity.
