I do not know that Baby Reindeer is for everyone, it is grim and extremely intense, and I don't think I could possibly give all the due CWs, but it really did absorb me and leave me in that state where I turned off the TV as the closing credits of the last episode rolled and just stared into space at it dead and empty for a solid twenty minutes

The 10 points of the public vote from Ireland to Israel are, at the very least, suspicious, given that I saw a minimum of 10 Palestinian flags on the way from home to get groceries (coincidentally, the first shop that boycotted South African products during apartheid)

@taber it costs very little money (at a state level) to get a bunch of vpns set up and payment methods to do a PR campaign of this size. Combined with the number and size of protests against the ongoing situation in Gaza, that can't be compared to anything I've seen in the 15 years I've lived here, I'm really really suspicious of that vote.

Ireland is in a special situation in all this considering how little ago they were colonised (and, according to many, some part of it is still colonised)

@taber I don't think any of the other broadcasters had to be involved, or mobile networks/card processors would knowingly be involved either. It wouldn't be such a massive scale job either, I don't think this'd really cost more than a million euros

@taber you get a few thousands sim cards from different countries (which every decent secret service probably already has), do X votes on each. The payment is taken from the credit on the sim card (as my two votes were) so technically the payment processor isn't involved as they just receive credit from a number of phone numbers. I'm not sure how it can be traced in an easy manner without a proper investigation into it

And it was a meh song, at best in top 10, but there was much better

@taber some people liked the song I don't think gets to the scale of almost winning the popular vote, especially on countries where the other country is incredibly disliked

@taber the Irish people see themselves on the Palestinians given that some have grandparents that were born as British subjects. I think conflating being against the state of Israel (and specially the ongoing genocide) with antisemitism is at the very least problematic

I don't think it's a "the Irish hate Israel" or are antisemitic (even though having only one bakery in Dublin that makes sufganiyot feels a bit like it), but it's probably the only country in Europe where all Parliament has considered boycotting products from the occupied areas (as they did with SA), it's almost a consensus. It's anecdotal only, but a guy stopped dating me because I travelled to Israel once

@taber the "bubble" on it is such that when I went to Berlin in Easter this year it caught me by surprise to see pro-israeli stickers in the street (and the 12 points from Germany were very much expected, and I don't question those or some others), but the scores from Spain, Ireland and Belgium are very unexpected and, honestly, suspicious

@taber and I get that and has to be exhausting (and some of the things I heard in the pub yesterday were... not great), but the song is a top 10 at best (so far I think you're the only person I've read talking about it, Croatia Switzerland Italy (my top 3, I guesed 2/3) France Ireland were clearly over it, and, personal taste only, things like Austria Finland Spain Armenia could be kind of there for the novelty, even Ukraine if it wasn't for the rap part)

@taber my personal taste doesn't either (I like the weird campy acts usually, it's what drives me to watch it) but I have an uncanny ability guessing the winners and the absolute losers (I know saying Germany usually works but it isn't always the case)

@taber esoteric art school weirdos (Serbia 2022) are my thing too, but I go more for the mamarrachadas (proper weirdos) (Finland this year, Croatia 2023, Spain 2008, almost any entry by Romania and Moldova, or, obviously the best Eurovision entry of all times, Ukraine 2007)

@taber this year, a shopping mall close to where I live (Arnotts) sent me an email asking if I'd prefer not to receive mother's/father's day emails and I found it touching. Also they've respected it and haven't sent me any father's day communications

It's the only place that has asked me though

@taber I want to agree with all your other comments about xml I saw in the thread, at one stage I was one of the top 10 worldwide experts on a specific xml format, and it's. Just. Better.

I'm seriously tempted to get it, and it's only 12 euros, and it has controller compatibility on PC as well right?
