Hey UDOT is commiting to changing their philosophy to focus on including "all users." But the panel they've convened to highlight innovation focuses on C/AV, aerial mobility, and electric vehicles.

I'm feeling grumpy so I'm finally gonna say some stuff about the book Killed by a Traffic Engineer and why it's a stupid title for a book if you want it to create change in how streets are designed. https://islandpress.org/books/killed-traffic-engineer

Today's existential question: Does a 12yo really need a 63 tooth chainring with a 11-24 cassette?

The mom message chain is sharing that another one on my middle schoolers' friends who lives on our neighborhood got hit by a driver on his way to school today. He usually bikes on the sidewalk in the area of the arterial streets.

My new hill to die on as an urbanist transportation engineer is stop requiring traffic studies with development applications. They are an insidious cousin of parking minima, where some licensed engineer applies the ITE Trip Generation Manual, a collection of weak statistical analyses of very small samples, to figure out "how many cars to accommodate."

Day 1 of Bike to School Bootcamp we learned the parts of the bike & safety inspected our bikes. We fixed:

  • 3 loose threaded stems,
  • 2 wobbly wheels,
  • 2 derailleur limits,
  • 3 sets of brakes,
  • a not-straight front wheel,
  • a chain stuck between the bottom bracket & the crank, &
  • 2 flat tires!
We also spent time outside doing basic bike handling skills like step-off stops, power-position starts, shifting down before corners, & scanning behind you before changing position in the lane.

A tweenage girl labels the parts of a bike on a worksheet. A class handout is next to her.

Rode the Big Dummy, which despite a freaking incredible build is just so slow. I guess I picked up a piece of glass because I got a nasty flat and because I rarely ride the bike I was utterly unprepared. I truly hate the anti-theft doohickeys on the stem, seat, and wheels, but I did dial in the saddle angle and my GSD saddle now has a home. It's probably cargo bike nerd sacrilege, but I'm not that in love with the Rolling Jackass kickstand.

A Surly Big Dummy with a grocery bag over the saddle locked to a terrible bike rack.

Five years ago, I volunteered a shift at the community bike shop and a grandma came in with her 9yo granddaughter looking for training wheels. I put her on the back of the tandem and did a few laps of the parking lot to build her confidence, them I took the pedals off a BMX and sent her out for a few more laps before putting them back on. Her grandma told me, as she watched her pedal around happily, that it was one of her best life memories.

In my stupid tech heavy hotel room waiting for "the engineer" to come and show me how to turn the lights on because all the stupid "remote" does is make the walls different colors.

When the 13yo girl texts you from her vacation on the opposite side of the country to ask you to finish her bike, you finish the damn bike even though your knee dislocated half way through. I cannot get the front derailleur to work so she's gonna have a 1x and learn to increase her cadence from about 40.

This morning driving the carpool we saw a bunch of blue lights at the intersection where the kids lifelong friends got hit by a driver. It was a t-bone crash that also probably wouldn't have happened if the city had installed hardened centerlines 18 months ago. The vehicles came to rest inches from the crosswalk where high school students cross to access the bus stop and it happened at the time they are there to go to zero hour. I am so tired.

Can someone explain to me the point of an annual physical if your provider tells you that you can't report any health concerns, can't refill your prescriptions, and you don't need an "annual pap smear" because you had one SIX YEARS AGO?

REI's little cargo ebike that could, the Generation 1.1e and Generation 1.2e are on sale right now for $900 and $1140, respectively. (For $240, you get a front rack and a bigger battery.) These things are light, zippy, and capable if you are looking for an entry-level ebike from a durable brand. https://www.rei.com/product/189967/co-op-cycles-generation-e11-electric-bike

Years ago, I subscribed to WSDOT's Cooperative Automated Transportation list serve. At the time (2019), the industry was exceedingly bullish for Autonomous Vehicles. As my interest waned (and the industry collapsed), I stopped reading the digest (but never unsubscribed). I just took a peek at a recent one and it's really satisfying to see the change in tone. A selection of headlines in the next post. 1/2

I finally found a DOT engineer who doesn't believe in anthropogenic causes of climate change AND doesn't believe Vision Zero is achievable (and therefore isn't worth striving for). His state hasn't gone a day without a death on their roads in 22 years.) But don't worry, he no longer has any design responsibilities.

WHY IS TRB GOING BACK TO IN-PERSON PANEL MEETINGS do I really have to choose between being on a panel for "Digitizing Bicycle and Pedestrian Treatments for Promoting Active Transportation Equity and Safety" and the climate/COVID/etc? Somebody make the extroverts stop this nonsense.

Is there some kind of quota for how many of these lies a news outlet has to publish a month? Gas prices are lower than average now and the range is only 1-3 avocado toasts per month.

The teenager crashed on the way home and smashed his phone because a driver failed to yield the right of way and cut him off executing a left turn.

It's a property damage only crash, damage equal to the cost of the phone.

No way to report this crash. Not to the school district. Not to the crash database operated by the DOT because law enforcement would laugh in our faces if we tried.
