These days "father/son bonding time" looks like a friday night at the urgent care. Though it was pretty hilarious when the doctor popped her head into the room and announced in a chipper, sing-song voice, "GUESS WHO HAS STREP?"

Hansen was deeply troubled by what she read. One paper, published in 2012 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that, in children, as PFOS levels rose so did the chance that vaccines were ineffective. Children with high levels of PFOS and other fluorochemicals were more likely to experience fevers, according to a 2016 study. Other research linked the chemicals to increased rates of infectious diseases, food allergies and asthma in children. Dozens of scientific papers had found that, in adults, even very low levels of PFOS could interfere with hormones, fertility, liver and thyroid function, cholesterol levels and fetal development. Even PFBS, the chemical that 3M chose as a replacement for PFOS, caused developmental and reproductive irregularities in animals, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
Between 1951 and 2000, 3M produced at least 100 million pounds of PFOS and chemicals that degrade into PFOS. This is roughly the weight of the Titanic. After the late ’70s, when 3M scientists established that the chemical was toxic in animals and was accumulating in humans, it produced millions of pounds per year. Scientists are still struggling to grasp all the biological consequences. They have learned, just as Johnson did decades ago, that proteins in the body bind to PFOS. It enters our cells and organs, where even tiny amounts can cause stress and interfere with basic biological functions. It contributes to diseases that take many years to develop; at the time of a diagnosis, one’s PFOS level may have fallen, making it difficult to establish causation with any certainty.

Today, I was riding on a multi use path, on a segment that is right next to (and level with) a road - this stretch is basically a really wide bike lane. Ahead of me, a city employee came up, pulled off the road and on to the path and parked. The only option to go around him involved riding on the road, in the opposite direction of traffic. Thankfully, no one was coming, so I did just that.

In theory this (Weinmann) rim has a "safety line": https://www.weinmanntek.com/technology/6/6

However, there's no obvious line that I can see, so maybe there's a tiny bit of life left in this. But it's not really worth the risk, as this is a front wheel (dynamo hub) and so rim failure would be catastrophic.

edit: also, I hate that this has a line that's supposed to appear when it's worn, rather than a line or dot that disappears when worn. And kudos to everyone ignoring my dumb pun in the OT. Don't encourage me!

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@EverydayMoggie @enobacon You can swap out the front fork for one that has disc brake tabs. But also, he's just kidding.

This is a 90's cannondale, I've actually considered disc brakes but just not worth it. I'm waiting for something critical to break, and then my wife will upgrade to a bike w/ disc brakes.

what if NYC but without all these stupid fucking cars?

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

This toot brought to you by the car-disaster that is in . I was biking on 70th Rd to get to Austin St, which has angled back-in parking because hey why not? Someone was parking, so of course there was a line of 4 cars that I was passing when the driver of one of the cars starts laying on the horn impatiently as I was literally a foot away next to the car. I made the mistake of not wearing headphones. Must remember to always wear headphones when biking in NYC.

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

And yes I know it's illegal to wear headphones while biking in NYC. Fuck off, I tried obeying the law and it's damaging to my health.

@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

lol. Shelter wouldn't let us take home fosters (in a hard shell carrier) in the because "it's too dangerous". I even deflated the tires a bit for this, for a smoother ride.

So many in , I'm so fucking tired of it.

[for background, every cat I've ever dealt with has been terrified in a car. They hate the speed, and the loud engine/vibrations. It's one of the reasons I started transporting my former cats by bike.]

View of the inside of the box. There's a bag of cat food, a white fuzzy cat bed, a blanket underneath, and room for a cat carrier on top of the cat bed.

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@VCP Yeah, this foster would also transport to us, but it's also 15 mins away by bike. I thought that would be more convenient than having to deal with random volunteers doing car stuff who may or may not show up on time. Apparently not. 🤷

What was especially frustrating was that I warned them I'd show up by (cargo) bike, and the person I talked to was okay with that. Another person there was also okay with it, it was only a third person who was like, "you can't do that."
