It's surreal how slowly time moves in the world of C compilers.

Today there are still active projects that are hesitant to move past C89, and C99 is still the "new" standard.

The C99 standard has been released before the first public Mac OS X and Windows XP. It's older Itanium and the x86-64 instruction set. It predates iPod, Game Cube, first ever Xbox, and Nokia 3310.

Entire platforms lived and died in the meantime, while C programmers still can't be sure if they can rely on the new C99.

It's certainly better to having to update your whole build system and fix compatibility problems every few months with modern languages.

Address auto-completes are the worst idea ever.
There are so many services I can't use because they just don't accept my address.
If you really think they are helpful, at least add a fallback to a normal form.

Anyone got any great suggestions on how to identify where my old partitions where on this disk? testdisk has failed to identify any and that seems to be the suggested solution. Or something that can identify the start of ext4 filesystems would work? Otherwise it’s file recovery and crying…

cdamian,
@cdamian@rls.social avatar

@zimpenfish there appears to be a manual option: https://tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition/recovering.html

And maybe there is something in the logs? At least the size in blocks.

I remember when I first saw a CPC464 in a shop I was working in, in 1984.

It was a very neat answer to what the market needed in 1982. But by 1984, cassette storage and Z80s were clearly long in the tooth—it came out the same year as the Macintosh, and 12 months late Atari STs and Amigas were showing up.

cdamian,
@cdamian@rls.social avatar

@cstross
We had the Schneider CPC 664, my first computer with a disk drive (ok, it belonged to my dad)

Obviously they chose a format (3 inch), which wasn't used by any of the following home computers or PCs, and made them especially expensive.

I learned a lot though, and even got a program printed in a magazine.

A breath of fresh air to read somebody breaking with the TDD dogma. Test are useful but please remember: "Write tests, not too many, mostly integration." and try to exercise some judgement.

I'm in the mostly unit test camp, and not necessarily TDD.
