My intel laptop on kde is unreliable, but gnome is super stable.

If you want windows like taskbar, you can turn it on gnome and other features that will make it more like windows.

On desktop with AMD video card I saw no difference between kde and gnome.

I ended up back on gnome. Because it was less distracting. I am a long time gnome user and kde was a curiosity. Latest versions of both (Arch Linux).

Kualk,

I don’t think my monitors are high def.

It is simply 3440x1440.

Kualk,

Given that my monitor is HiDef, no I have no size issues in Gnome.

KDE apps under gnome look like kde apps.

Gnome look like gnome.

After I installed KDE, vscode title bar got bigger.so, KDE impacted look of some apps. Not gnome itself.

Kualk,

Scary details.

Good reason to have external drive backup and remote site backup.

$18.49 + shipping from newegg for new 500 gb sata drive would have saved your data. At these prices it could have been your new drive. Use rsync for quick drive backup.

Remote site backup is cheap these days.

Roughly $5 per 1 Terabyte per month. You can get lower for 160 gb of data with initial upload price spike. Use rclone for offsite backup.

Kualk,

When i tried it 6 months ago I didn’t like how UI apps took more time to start. Then I realized it is all flatpak or similar. Package management was slow. Installation process took very long time. I assume it tried to auto detect my hardware.

And went back to Arch.

SUSE Feature set is the best.

Kualk,

It depends on your location and particularly on how strong the seasons are at your place.

Kualk,

It is not likely to be XFCE specific.

Make sure you have properly configured swap space and its size is larger than RAM. Because this will be the easiest cause. Some people stated as much as twice the ram size.

There’s a wiki page on arch wiki trying to help with this issue. In short, prepare for a lot of work and good luck.

Kualk,

Jellyfin, i own my streaming

Kualk,

Jellyfin has mobile and desktop clients.

For me for a long time it was a coin toss between Plex and Jellyfin.

For some long forgotten reason I ended with Emby and eventually migrated to Jellyfin as its true free open source fork.

With jellyfin DLNA server i can play same music on Apple TV, etc. although DLNA clients are certainly not as nice as native apps. One can offset problem with playlists.

Both have quick start wiki pages like this: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Jellyfin

Official documentation: jellyfin.org/docs/

Kualk,

Mine lasted for years as far as battery is concerned.

Unfortunately the loudness level has dropped significantly. I went to Apple store and they acknowledged this as that’s what happens to them.

Eventually I gave up and replaced with alternative lower cost similar style headphones. The sound level is plenty, but microphone is terrible. I tried several and found I found similar problems. It is acceptable for much lower cost, but doesn’t compare.

Kualk,

Downvotes shall list better headphones.

I myself have not found a better solution.

I like apple headphones and i settled on similar shaped non-apple brand at a fraction af the price, but it is lower in quality compared to apple. Microphone is crap and I stopped trying to use it. Headphones level is good at low level and high level sound reproduction, but it is not as accurate as apple.

In the end the trade off is worth it to me for the price, but i will not claim at is better.

So, bring on your alternative and price of it.

Kualk,

Trust that it works well and it does. However, first gen was not as good as after it.

  1. Good microphone quality. Not true for first gen after some time in my experience
  2. Reliable connection. True most of the time.
  3. Apple ecosystem, yes to a small degree. Ability to see battery level is nice.
  4. Fast recharge times
  5. Endless usage time if using one headphone at a time. It is my preference usage method.

Cons: high price. After several years I expect to find comparable competition. It exists, and i use it, but i lost: 1, 2, 3 from my list. And usability is crap: accidentally touching headphone turns it off.

Kualk,

C will never fully go away.

Constrained environments will always remain in C.

But RUST offers the best trade off today. It is way better than C++.

C IMO is not comparable to RUST.

Kualk,

World of Tanks Blitz.

You either would like it or not. Requires brain to play. Think Call of Duty only fast reflexes and low latency make no difference. Each game is around 10 minutes or less.

It is totally possible to play and enjoy for free, if willing to accumulate cash prior to getting tank at next level.

Free to play.

You will have to use proton. It works with it.

Kualk,

It works on proton

Kualk,

Please share more as you keep using it.

Kualk,

Arch is the best Debian alternative out there. They have archinstall now. It will speed up installation and will allow use of encrypted drive.

Since you want Docker, it works better on btrfs. Arch can do that on encrypted drive.

It is lightweight as far as you want to take it.

NixOS is a great light alternative, but i gave ip on it twice.

Manjaro if arch is too intimidating.

Kualk,

Docker images are immutable and if you run lots of images there will be overlap of commonly used layers.

Docker has BTRFS driver, which will efficiently reuse layers on BTRFS.

Basically, there’s good chance to waste less drive space with Docker on BTRFS.

Arch is good for home server, because you will not have to do major update ever again and because at home one usually doesn’t mind restarting after updating.

Debian is a good option for private virtual server on the cloud. Because Debian is frequently an option there, while Arch is not an option due to its rolling nature. Debian supposedly can update without restart, but I never trusted that.

Gnome is simple. Gnome is native for GTK apps, which are majority. You can turn on classic taskbar, turn off virtual spaces, add minimize button and it is now a classic user experience.

I don’t understand this obsession with Wayland vs X11.

On Arch I choose Gnome and the underlying technology is picked for me based on hardware of the machine.

I recall having X11, because I had nVidia card. I bought AMD video card and it started to run Wayland without any effort on my side. It was a while ago.

Arch would require you to make more decisions, which may lead you into the woods. Use Manjaro, which made Arch tech decisions for you like choice of network management stack.

I tried Manjaro last week on laptop. It has a polished user experience. Pick to use non-free drivers. Use Libre Office instead of free office. Install Firefox and chromium. Done.

Gnome just added full search and it is included in Arch and shall be in Manjaro in less than 2 weeks.

The advantage with rolling release for your parents is that you will never run install again. You will never need to upgrade version of Debian or Ubuntu. Just update OS every time you visit them, no more frequent than once every few months, not less than twice a year.

Manjaro has polished software installation experience at graphical user interface level.

Gnome has been running user space applications just fine for me on Wayland, Arch Linux.

There were some issues about 2 years ago. I have no complaints for last 12 months.

Wayland is today’s life for some.

  • Steam gaming , proton and native
  • visual studio code
  • qemu running windows
  • app interrupting work to relax eyes
  • old mysql dashboard ui

Basically, I have not seen app specific issues for my user flow.

Kualk,

I don’t have problem with hair, but I like shaving to #1.

Kualk,

I agree with others that best policy is to shave bold or very short. I do #1, because i find it most convenient.

If you really want to check the product it is best to go to product website (they usually promote and sell). Read their legal statements. Most of them will point there that product makes no claims of medical use, it is just a supplement, it is not FDA approved. It is for entertainment purposes only.

The legal small print on the website itself will tell you if you should buy or not. It protects website from liability and they gamble that most people don’t read it.

You will spend less time going through legal statements than looking for “other people’s unbiased opinion“ on internet. The latter may not even exist as products can be rebranded every 6 months.
