What's growing on, Beehaw?

We’re halfway through potting up all the plants we’ve overwintered, but are looking at temps below freezing for the next two nights. Today will be about getting covers ready for everything and setting up ambient warmth for several of our plants that are currently flowering. On my way home from a doctor’s appointment, I...

LallyLuckFarm,

Today’s temperature didn’t get as high as I would have liked, so I’ll be filling some buckets with warm water, closing them, and then placing them near the plants before covering everything with light blankets. Another nursery near us has electricity access for many of theirs, and use incandescent string lights to buffer their plants against the cold. The family owned orchard the next town over has said that if the frost is later than a certain amount of flowering, they’ll do small bonfires throughout the orchard to provide protection.

LallyLuckFarm,

Here’s hoping those seeds grow so well it reinvigorates you for the other stuff you’d like to tackle! I’m saddened that folks are disrespectful towards your gardens when they could instead be helped by them.

LallyLuckFarm,

Being busy having fun in the garden is one of the best feelings in the world! We have some crimson amaranth that we’ve let self seed as forage for our birds - the flowers are amazing and it’s fun watching the flock work for the seeds but I may have to allocate some for bread. I hope their flowers fill you with joy and the bread fills you with yum!

LallyLuckFarm,

On a macro scale, not too bad! On a micro scale, though, not too great.

101 Additional Advices (kk.org)

Six years ago I celebrated my 68th birthday by gifting my children 68 bits of advice I wished I had gotten when I was their age. Every birthday after that I added more bits of advice for them until I had a whole book of bits. That book was published a year ago as Excellent Advice for Living, which many people tell me they read...

LallyLuckFarm,

I loved every one of these, thank you for sharing!

LallyLuckFarm,

I recently played through Miles Morales twice and decided to play the previous Spiderman game. Still having fun, but I’m trying to get to the sections with Miles (he’s my personal favorite). It’s interesting to see the kinds of side quests and mini games they chose to keep in retrospect.

LallyLuckFarm,

Great job you two! Our boy still has real struggles with

LallyLuckFarm,

Super hard for us! He’s basically with me all day every day for the last four years. He can do it if I’m in view but the second I’m out of sight things are not okay 😂

LallyLuckFarm,

I have a ton of respect for folks who express their relationship with the land they’re stewarding in the way you have.

neglected succulent

Plants that do well with the STUN (Sheer, Total, Utter Neglect) method are the best. I bet you didn’t even give yourself credit for practicing such advanced gardening techniques bee laugh emoji

LallyLuckFarm,

share the rest with you all

Please do! I have it on good authority that it’s practically a jungle on a balcony and am excited to see it when you post it.

Some of those pumpkins look very leggy for the stage of leaf development they’re at, are you using supplemental lights for them?

For your brassicas, how close is their light source? We’ve had good success fixing legginess by shifting lights closer and adding a small oscillating fan to coax stems into getting stronger.

LallyLuckFarm,

A little birdy bee told me

I think they would benefit from more light, yes. Many of the pumpkins we start tend to have true leaves come in while the cotyledons (starter leaves) are still within a few cm of the soil. I have to go through some photos later today and I’ll see if I can find a picture of our last set of starts for you

LallyLuckFarm,

In a pinch some old bedsheets and croquet wickets from an estate sale make a great frost cloth for early brassicas outside, if that’s a concern at this point of the season where you are

Help transplanting burr oak saplings

Last autumn I stored several acorns in a 5-inch pot that was filled with potting soil and covered. I took the cover off 2 days ago to discover 7 saplings between 3 and 7 inches long. They are too big for the pot I was storing them in. Are they safe to transplant at this stage? What size pot should I transplant them in? How do I...

LallyLuckFarm,

My oak experience isn’t with burr, but they have relatively fragile taproots at that stage of development. I have successfully extracted some from a similar situation by sssssllllloooowwwwwwllllyyyyyy submerging the pot in a 5 gallon bucket until the potting mix and saplings floated themselves out of the pot, allowing me to separate them.

@LibertyLizard might be able to offer better advice than I can, they’ve been doing some oak transplanting as well.

LallyLuckFarm,

Built a new PC for my wife and I, first I’ve done in over a decade. Mini ITX boards are wicked cute but it did start feeling a little cramped by the end. I also built a little egg washing station to hopefully save me some time cleaning eggs this year.

What's Growing On, Beehaw? Weekly Garden Chat

There are about a hundred potted perennials out on my front lawn right now as the latest wintry mix hits our area, and someone dropped off a huge box of cell trays and small pots to us yesterday. Some of them will go to our local library for their gardeners workshops and to prep for their annual plant sale fundraiser, some will...

LallyLuckFarm,

Yum! I was hoping to make hot sauce last year but there was just too much rain for happy peppers.
