Crosscode is my favorite game of all time. It takes the best elements of retro games and creates an incredible experience from a beautiful combination. I said "eh, why not?" and got it on sale after seeing so many positive reviews and convincing recommendation videos and absolutely lived in it from beginning to end.

Gameplay: The gameplay is clean, the combat is fast and intuitive using both melee and ranged attacks that are extremely responsive, the special moves are insanely cool and I love figuring out the best ones to strengthen and set, I love switching elements on the fly with the push of a button to add things like fire and ice damage and how it all feels like second nature on a controller.

The puzzles get really clever and I was a big fan, mostly because figuring out the puzzles in the dungeons is simultaneously showing you ways to use new powers to manipulate your environment or attack your foes. Incredibly smart way to teach you the versatility of your powers by solving a dungeon puzzle instead of a boring tutorial. I will say that the first dungeon can start to drag, and the later dungeons can get really challenging, but that anytime I felt like I was spending too much time on something I'd just look up the Wyvern (he was one of the backers for the game and has been playing it since early versions) videos on Youtube to see how to solve what I couldn't. No shame in asking for help, keep things fun before they just get frustrating if you're like me, plus I needed to not waste too much time stuck on something because I was addicted to the story and needed to see what happened next! Which brings me to...

Story: The story pulled me in and just floored me. There were points where I had to pause just sobbing in tears, other times I had to pause to run around the room with joy. Go into it blind, it will pull you in!

A Unique Strength: It's crazy how real your companions feel, completely sells the feeling and idea of being in an MMORPG. Part of this is because of how effectively written your friends are, and part of it is the fact that they are capable of acting on their own and in no way require you to control or protect them. In that way it reminded me a lot of Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite where you have a companion that, not only takes care of herself, but actually helps you and improves the gameplay in a way that it feels real lonely when they're not around. I was emotionally invested in these people for sure.

I also like that it's one of the few games these days to have a free playable demo. The demo is the short prologue at the beginning of the game. It's fun but it greatly undersells things as it shows you some of the bare basics of melee combat. Learning the ranged attack system right after the prologue and then progressing into the range of the elemental abilities is where the combat shines. And finding out how big this world actually is adds more to it then a demo has a chance at conveying.

TL;DR****10/10 for Crosscode from me!

Coherence (2013) - [Synopsis: Strange things begin to happen when a group of friends gather for a dinner party on an evening when a comet is passing overhead.]

Hearing breaking glass, the group heads outside to find someone smashed the window on Hugh's car. The non-verbal communication happens when... ::: spoiler spoiler they separate to check their own cars for any damage. When Kevin comes to check on Em at her car, there is this moment where they both go completely silent. No one speaks but it's clear that Em realizes she's not talking to her Kevin, but one of the variants. At the same time, it's clear the alternate Kevin realizes he's not talking to his Em either, but a version of her that's a stranger to him (and us, the audience).

They're surrounded in the complete darkness of the night in the power outage blackout of the neighborhood, the only lighting in the entire scene are the flashlights they have pointed at each other's faces. Without a word, they slowly back away from each other, light fixed on each other's faces, slowly disappearing in the darkness opposite of each other to escape, each one scared of the other. :::

It's so delightfully unnerving and creepy, one of the most effective scenes out there. If you haven't seen it, the movie is included with Amazon Prime Video if you have that. If you like unraveling mysteries or mind-bending movies, don't read anything else about the movie and go watch it spoiler free!

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World! I loved the graphic novels, really enjoyed the movie and am very much looking forward to the movie cast coming back to do the upcoming anime. Alison Pill is such a fantastic Kim Pine I'm glad she's reprising the character (she was good in Goon (2011) as well)!

You just expanded my world, I never knew about the commentary! I bought it digitally on itunes years ago and just checked to see if it included the commentary. It doesn't, but different commentary tracks are on youtube in full. I just tested it and I was able to sync starting up the commentary on Youtube and starting my copy a few seconds late so that they start playing together. Definitely gonna check these out!

I think the context you added as a clue helped eliminate some movies from being the answer, but definitely still having trouble with this one! For whatever reason it keeps evoking "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" quotes in my head which isn't helpful since it's a TV show.

I know it's not this but I'm guessing it just to get things started in hopes of getting another clue: Pineapple Express (2008)?

The Avengers (2012)?

Now that's progress, nicely done! It takes a lot to build up to that, sounds like you've been consistent and dedicated and put the work in needed to hit a big milestone. I tend to get impatient with my own leg progress so I find it inspiring being reminded what goals can be hit when we don't give up!

Severance - I'm almost done with it, I've got three episodes left. A bit of a slow burn but every second of it tells you something about the characters or brings you closer toward the mystery of it all so no time is wasted. I'm enjoying it, definitely recommend it if you're into the "mind-bending" sub-genre at all. On the mind-bending scale, it's close to something like Maniac (Netflix) and maybe Legion (FX, Hulu) so far in comparison to more vague mystery (e.g. Twin Peaks, The OA).

Now that Apple TV+ has built up a few shows I'm interested in, I finally went in on a month hoping to see everything I want to in that time so I can pause the subscription afterward and save a buck until more builds up again.

I just finished it and wow. That was such a tense season finale, the kind that put me on the edge of my seat and absolutely floored me with every big moment. I need to see where this goes in Season 2! Even so, I'm happy to wait as long as it takes with the halt in S2 production for the writers strike. When I see a show like this with such a well-crafted story to tell it's just another reminder that writers deserve to make a living wage. Fitting that the show itself delves into similar themes of unfair treatment of workers.

Just checked my “Mind-bending/Sense of dread” watchlist and Possessor is already on there – just added Infinity Pool to it now as well, thanks! Might take a while to get to both but I’m saving this so I can read the spoilers part of your post afterward.
